What is Shark Culling?

First, before I get into the purpose of this documentary, you should have a basic understanding of what shark culling is used for. Shark culling is a cruel process that kills and injures sharks, making them suffer for a long period of time. The purpose of this tactic is solely to reduce the threat of sharks in the area by killing them. Even though it is their habitat, government authorities are invading it in order to reply when a shark attack occurs.

What is The Shark Cull about?

This documentary focuses on exposing and spreading awareness about drum lining occurring in Australia. A form of shark culling, drum lines bait for sharks which bring them closer into land in order to kill them. If sharks stay on the line for too long before getting pulled onto their boat or off the line, it will die.

This is a picture that shows how drum lines are set up.

If at first glance, the shark looks to be over 3 meters (about 10 feet) then it will be killed

If at first glance, the shark looks to be over 3 meters (about 10 feet) then it will be killed. After the shark is already dead it will be measured, meaning if it was under 3 meters, it was killed for no reason. The process is long and hard for the sharks, they suffer through getting shot multiple times and having to be stuck on a line with a large hook sticking in their head. It's an inhumane way to kill an animal. An endangered animal at that. They also have gone as far as to kill protected species of great whites.

Why should you watch this?

This documentary really provides a great opportunity to learn more about what shark culling is, and why it should be stopped. The real-life footage allows you to see how it happens and what happens to the sharks. This still is a problem that happens today, so we need to be educated and aware of it.

Also, it has a segment of an interview with a lady named Sharon Burden who is actually a mother that lost her son to a shark attack. Despite this, she still thinks shark culling is wrong and should be stopped. She is a strong, caring woman that deserves to have her story shared and known. It is an interesting & important view that serves as a great part of this documentary.

---

Full respect to Sharon & her family, she is still fighting for a great cause even after a tragedy. This documentary was very informative about the shark culling and their efforts to help in the best way they can.
