A ship at sea. The sky was overcast and dark. A cold wind was blowing.
Unsurprisingly, the upper deck was deserted.
Except for an adolescent girl who was standing close to the railing. Perilously close to the railing. She started to lean over.
Natty and I rushed to her.
I touched her left arm. "Don't do that," I gasped.
The girl half turned to face us. She looked terribly sad.
"I won't," she said. "Although I can't think of a good reason why I shouldn't. All the people I loved are lost to me now or gone, and the place where I am headed does not bear thinking about."
Natty grinned. "It so happens that you are wrong. On both accounts."
