I woke up to the annoying buzzing sound of my alarm clock. It was 5 a.m. on a Saturday. I was really tired because I hadn't gone to sleep until... I think it was 2. The more I'd think about it, I really didn't know. I was doing my homework for the weekend. To me this is pretty normal, doing homework as soon as I get home on a Friday. I've done it ever since I can remember. That way, once I have all of it done, I have the entire weekend to do whatever I'd like. I remember falling asleep listening to some of my favorite music but don't remember turning it off, or turning my light off in fact. "I should really start using earbuds or my parents will yell for sure," I told myself.
Pealing myself from my warm bed, I put a pair of fluffy socks on and one of my warmest sweatshirts on with sweatpants. I walked over to where my phone was and turned on my music more quietly than it had been. I didn't think anyone would be awake yet but I checked anyway on my way to get breakfast. My family normally isn't awake early in the morning like I always am, however I like to get an early start to the day. I walked down the hall, plastered with family photos, past Alex and Sam's room and I knew Alex was awake immediately from the smell escaping their room. It was a very strong odor; kind of a musty smell as if someone had grown up in a warm wet cave. It had been the smell of him being grumpy. It couldn't have been Sam for sure, he was always so happy in the morning, a very pleasant smell. The smell of pure happiness always reminded me of when I was younger.
Around Christmas my mother would always bake different varieties of cookies while Alex and I decorated the Christmas tree. Since Alex and I were so tiny we would decorate only the bottom branches of the tree ourselves before being hoisted upward towards the top by my dad. Every year we would alternate between Alex and I to place the angel on the top, a glowing white beauty. My dad would always create a fire in the fireplace and no matter how old we got or how many times he warned us, he would always warn us not to go too close to the fire. Between the cookies, Christmas tree, and fire; the smells had nearly been overwhelming but they were still just a pleasant, nice smell. Sam had only been a baby around those times and by the middle of the day like that he would normally be taking a nap. Now that we've grown up a little more we haven't really been doing our early Christmas traditions. My mom still makes the cookies, and Sam will decorate the tree if he feels like it, but other than that we don't really do much of anything else. All of our relatives are spread out more across the world so we don't get to see them much around Christmas.
My parents always told us that it was safer to keep our families apart. They told us that if there were too many powers in one area, then the public could possibly find out about us. My parents refuse to tell us yet what we are called Alex, Sam, and I but we are meant to find out when we officially turn an adult. After we do find out more about ourselves we have to go through a 'special training.' In other words, how to protect yourself from the public and use your powers in our everyday lives the correct way. My parents don't have powers like my siblings and I do, however they know all about it because their parents had powers. There isn't a pattern in who in our family has powers but if one child in a generation does, then all of your children in your generation will have powers.
I tiptoed to the kitchen not wanting to walk on the cold white tiles even though I had socks on. I heard the familiar click of the heat turning on and knew that the floor would soon be warm anyway. Pouring myself a bowl of my favorite cereal, Captain Crunch, I turned the TV on from the glass kitchen table that overlooked the living room, but failed at finding something good to watch.
Alex must of heard my alarm clock go off and came trudging down the hall after me to get breakfast for himself. Unlike me he got out two waffles from the freezer and ate them still frozen without anything on them. He was always very strange like that, ever since I could remember. The least he could do was warm them up. I must have given him some kind of look because the smell I had smelled earlier that came from his room only got stronger.
"What made you get out of bed so early?" I was curious.
"Couldn't sleep," he groaned, "Why are you up so early?" He was clearly only asking me to seem nice but knowing him and how he was in the morning, he really didn't care.
"I'm going to the movies with Aliena later today," I told him. Telling Alex that, made the smell go away almost entirely. It was so obvious he liked Aliena. I don't see why he wouldn't like her; she was smart, pretty, athletic, and she could sing. Every other boy at our school liked her too. Although, it was always a little strange that your brother liked the girl you were best friends with since second grade.
"Can I go too?" he questioned. A new smell, one a little better than the last, told me how much he really wanted to go. He was so hopeful.
I stared at him blankly expecting that after all these years he would finally get the idea that I didn't want him hanging out with Aliena and me, "No." Alex was doing nothing but annoying me. He clearly just wanted to go because Aliena was going. Although I did have to take a little pity on him because he smelled so desperate. "If you want to go that bad," I conditioned, " bring your own friend."
I had finished my breakfast and took my bowl to the sink. Before I could even turn back around Alex was on the phone asking one of his friends, probably James, to go to the movies with him. I had to feel bad for James because it was so early on a Saturday and Alex calling him probably woke him up. Normally Alex would not have called someone at that time. He was always thoughtful and considerate like that. Since he had called James or however at this time I realized Alex must have really wanted to go. I put away the milk and cereal, rolled my eyes and walked down the hall to get ready.
With curled hair, my favorite pair of jeans, and my new pair of grey converse, I was walking out the door to pick up Aliena. I had heard Alex run from the living room to the front door where I was standing. I could hear a children's cartoon coming from the TV and concluded that Sam must have also been awake. Alex was really excited and I could smell it.
Excitement was always one of my favorite emotions to be able to smell on someone because it did smell good. Unfortunately, people are rarely excited for something. Excitement was an emotion that a lot of people don't know. People used the word to tell someone they are excited but they really aren't, they're either nervous or just faking being excited, or vice-versa.
"I'm going too!" Alex announced.
I was the one who drove to pick up Aliena and James and to the movie theater, but I should have made Alex drive because I never wanted him to go with us anyway.
