* This one is a request from one of my readers on Quotev. Just a disclaimer, I've only read about half of Steel Ball Run so far, so it might completely mess with the actual plot, but I know some details of the ending to this part so this is gonna take place about a quarter into the race. I also had no idea what to write for this, so it's quite short and rushed. Just fluff content-wise. Hope you enjoy! *
Johnny and Gyro had been riding through the Wide Great Plains for a while now, and the trip was growing boring for both men. They had simply been riding through the land in silence for at least a few hours, and tension was growing between the two of them. The sun was beginning to set too, so they'd have to stop and set up camp in the next hour or so.
"Hey Gyro" Johnny spoke. "You got any water left? I've ran out and I'm a bit thirsty." Gyro slowed his horse slightly and turned to rummage through his bag for his canteen.
"Yeah, I've got plenty. How about we stop off by those rocks over there and set up for the night?" He replied, motioning over to their right where a few large rocks rested on the dirt. Johnny nodded his head in agreement, and the two brought their horses over to the area and stopped. After securing their steeds to ensure they wouldn't wander off in the night, they rustled through their bags, Johnny setting up a tent while Gyro managed to build a small ditch for a fire later on.
"Oh, Johnny, didn't you want some water?" Gyro asked, remembering the reason they stopped off here in the first place.
"Yeah, please." Johnny replied, settling down on the dirt and leaning against a rock for comfort. Gyro grabbed his canteen from his bag and handed it to Johnny, who thanked him promptly. After re-hydrating himself, Johnny handed the bottle back to Gyro.
"I think I saw a stream nearby, so I'm gonna go and refill our canteens while I have the chance." Gyro said with a smile, grabbing Johnny's canteen and heading off.
"M'kay, don't take too long now." Johnny replied as he left, returning the smile. There wasn't a lot he could do while Gyro was gone, on account of him not being able to walk an' all, so he simply leaned back and watched the sun set behind the horizon, letting his mind wander. He let out a long sigh, realising just how much he missed Gyro, even if he had only been gone for 5 minutes. When he was around, he felt like he could do anything. He had learned so much from him in the short time he had known him, and he found himself longing for his presence.
The sun had fallen a while ago now, and the stars had began to show themselves, shining in clusters above.
"What a beautiful sight..." Johnny said to himself, scanning the heavens above him. "So much better here with no city around to ruin the view..." His dialogue was cut off by the sound of footfalls approaching him, stirring up the dry land. He turned his head to see Gyro returning, two large bottles of water in each of his strong hands.
"Sorry I took so long Johnny, thought I'd wash off a little while I was there." He said, propping the canteens up against the men's luggage.
"Don't worry about it." Johnny responded as Gyro plopped himself down next to him and began lighting the fire. Once the logs began burning, he sat himself up against the rock, and began staring up at the night sky as well. The two continued to look up in silence for a minute or two, until Johnny broke the silence.
"Um, Gyro?" He hummed in response. "Can I say something? This might be a bit weird..."
"What's the matter?" Gyro chimed, turning his head to look into Johnny's eyes.
"Well, while you were gone, I realised somethin'... I really missed you." Johnny spoke, looking down at the dirt in embarrassment.
"Aww, thanks Johnny, good to know you love me." Gyro replied jokingly, letting out a hearty laugh, along with one of his classic 'Nyo-Ho's. Johnny looked back up at Gyro, his face showing no hint of laughter. Gyro quickly caught the message and calmed himself.
"I'm being serious, Gyro. I really felt... wrong without you by my side, and not just because I can't do much without you. I think... I think I like you..." Johnny spilled, never breaking eye contact with Gyro to show he wasn't playing around and meant every word. Gyro just stared at him for a moment, not knowing what to say. He then turned his body so that he was fully facing Johnny. He gently placed one hand on Johnny's thigh, raising the other to lightly cup his cheek.
"That's great Johnny... I can't believe you're actually telling me this." He said, a smile creeping upon his face.
"I told you Gyro, I'm not joking around!" Johnny stated, furrowing his brow at his reaction as his face began to heat up. Gyro let out a quick exhale, and pulled Johnny close to him, gently pressing his lips against his. Johnny was taken aback by this, and didn't know what to do for a moment. This was a totally new experience for him... he thought Gyro was messing about and didn't believe him, heck, maybe he was and was just humoring him. However, this felt right somehow, and he wasn't going to waste this moment, so he kissed back softly. He had expected Gyro to pull back as soon as he did this, but he didn't.
The two stayed like this for a while, simply sharing this moment and enjoying it. Eventually, Gyro pulled away, watching Johnny's eyes flutter open once more and watch him lovingly.
"... nor was I." Gyro finally replied, not that he needed to; his actions were proof enough. "I've also felt a connection between us for a while, but I wasn't sure what to do about it, so I'm glad you made the first move." He explained, flashing a bright smile.
The two had fun that night chatting and joking with each other, and had one of the best rests since the start of the race. In the morning, Johnny awoke to Gyro packing his things back onto Valkyrie.
"Morning, Sunshine." Gyro said, without turning.
"Mornin'..." Johnny replied, stretching out. "Hey, before we head off, mind showing me where that stream is? I'd love to get a wash before we leave." Gyro grinned at him.
"Sure thing, want me to help you wash off while I'm there?" He teased, his smile contorting into a playful smirk. Johnny said nothing in response to this, and simply shot him a glare. "I'm joking, don't give me that look!" Gyro replied, bursting into laughter. Johnny let out a laugh as well, and allowed him to take him over to the stream.
"Thanks, Gy." He said, giving him a small peck on the cheek as a sign of gratitude, but also to tease him back a bit. Gyro turned his head away from him slightly to hide his embarrassment, making Johnny chuckle slightly. The rest of this race was going to be plenty of fun.
* Hope this was ok! :) Also side-note, I was going to publish this yesterday but it was my birthday so ye! I'm legally an adult now! Gosh I'm old. *
