"Misery sure loves company".
BEE
"What's up B". Nicki greets from the other end of the line. I'm glad she picks on the first ring because I have so much to say but very little patience. I throw my folded clothes into my box one after the other as I exhale rapidly.
" Hi Nicki, I'm good. Sorry, I left without saying goodbye this morning".
"It's okay honey. Harry explained to me. How's your roommate, did you meet her yet?" She seems too excited but I was sure the excitement would fade as soon as I tell her who the unfortunate human being is.
"Uhmm, actually... that was the reason I called. I need another place to stay and I was wondering if I could crash at your place till I find an alternative." I'm thinking of the sanest reason to give her because it didn't make any sense that I was searching for accommodation when I already have one.
"Wait a minute, I can't quite understand you. What's going on there? Why do you need a new space? She asks confused.
Let's just say I paid for the wrong house and would rather stay on the streets than life with this pathetic excuse for a human being that is actually a sugar-coated, almost handsome, swine. Deep breaths Bee, now calm down and give her a coherent and cultured response.
"My roommate is a malignant bitch". I blurt out. Way to go Bee, nice choice of words.
" Woah! Easy, that's a lot to say about a person you've just met" She reprimands.
"Well, I wish I was wrong but hell no! He keeps proving me right every chance he gets". I exclaim.
" Wait a minute babe, did I hear you say 'he' or was it an error?" Nicki asks and I realize that I had given it out without knowing.
"No, it's not. I misread the advertisement note, turns out the person in need of a roommate is actually a dude."
"Well that's not so horrible, I mean most dorms and buildings are co-ed." She tries to explain but I don't care. Living with Carter was the last thing on my mind. Even if I wanted to stay, he didn't want me to and has already given me a refund of my rent.
"It's not about the gender Nicki, it's about the individual. This dude is totally unbelievable. I mean, I can't stand him and clearly, he can't stand me."
" Calm down Bee, what's going on?"
"After yesterday, I thought I would never have to see his annoying face ever again but the universe keeps slapping me right on the face." My voice is a bit calm as I sit on the bed, frustration kicking in as I begin to realize the situation I'm in.
"I think I'm lost, Who is this dude?" Nicki asks curiously.
"Carter. The Carter from yesterday in Venus". I respond.
"Bite me!" Nicki exclaims and I huff a little too loud.
"Yeah. So you see the reason I can't stay."
"Now I know what this is all about. Have you told Harry about this?" She asks immediately.
"No I just found out and you are the first person I'm calling". I tell her picking at the loose thread on my trouser." Why is he always rude and behaves like he's angry at the world?"
"All I know is that Carter has a special personality and has a little problem when it comes to meeting and accepting new people. He is not always that way if you get to know him".
" So am I supposed to put up with that attitude just because he is a jerk when it comes to thinking of someone else other than himself?" I ask.
"Harry will be in a better position to tell you, she's known him the longest. All I can tell you from my experiences with him is that he is a lot to handle."
"I don't even know what to do and I've got classes throughout the week I'm supposed to be already settled in." I try hard not to cry as I recall all the intense scrubbing and arranging I had done to this house. He wasn't even appreciative.
"I would have really loved you to move in with us but Sheila is coming to stay with us for a few days. Her room is getting repainted and she's allergic to fumes from fresh paints. I'm really sorry Bee".
My palms get sweaty as I try to swallow the huge lump that has formed in my throat. Staying with Nicki and Harry was the only option I had. Maybe I shouldn't have insisted on a refund, I really needed this house. I'm quiet for a while and she adds.
"I could tell Harry to talk to him. They are really close and he would let you stay besides he has a condo he shares with his friends. You will barely see him, I promise". She tries to assure me and although I object the part where Harry has to call to beg him on my behalf, I'm glad she's trying to help.
"Thanks a lot, Nicki. I don't know what I would have done."
"Well for now relax and quit throwing a fit while I try my best to sort this out okay. Call me if anything goes wrong". I thank her again and she hangs up.
I pack most of my clothes into my box and take down my new curtains then pull the zippers shut. I drag it out to the hallway and close the door. I move to the sitting room to drop the keys with Carter and find him playing video games on the large flat-screen television. His hair was a bit wet like he had finally taken a shower and he had a lingering scent of cinnamon and spice shower gel. No matter how good he smells, he is still an arrogant jerk and I am very pissed at him period.
" Here are your keys. I'll come back tomorrow for my remaining stuff". I say and try hard to avoid staring at his face. He ignores me for a minute and I drop the keys on the sofa next to him instead and turn to leave. I have only taken three steps when I hear two words barely louder than a whisper.
"Don't go".
