Consequences

Chapter 1 - A New Year

"Hurry along!" Professor Hadley called as me and the rest of the students from Gryffindor all filed into the Great Hall. The Headmaster, Professor Burton, was stood firmly at the lectern, waiting for us to settle down. My friend, Adam, sat down at a nearby table and pulled me next to him. The hall quietened and we all strained to hear the Professor's annual start-of-the-year speech; some rubbish about new teachers, then the motivational section, and finally the First Year Sorting. That was the best bit; watching the new students squirm under the Sorting Hat, and then their little squeal of excitement when they evaded Slytherin.

Eventually, after almost an hour of pointless Sorting that for some reason we were forced to endure, the feast began. There was chicken, beef, lamb, pork, any meat you could imagine, and an array of vegetables next to dishes I'd never even heard of. It was glorious. I ate and ate until I could eat no more.

By the time Adam and I had finished, it was getting late. Once Professor Burton had dismissed the whole school, we were supposed to collect our timetables as lessons began tomorrow, but we headed back to the Common Room instead. "Get 'em later," Adam suggested as we climbed the various staircases that led to the Gryffindor Common Room. "And besides, there'll be others in our class who we can follow." After mumbling the password to the fat lady, we collapsed into the chairs by the fire. We were the only ones in there.

"Let's make this, our fourth year at Hogwarts, the best one yet." I said to Adam, breaking into a laugh.
