The next day was Monday and I awoke to the sunlight streaming in through the dorm's windows. Shielding my eyes from the intense glare, I got dressed in record time then headed down to the Common Room, where Adam sat reading a book by the fire. "I didn't know you read," I said to him as he placed the book on the coffee table and we exited the room. "I love reading," he replied with a smirk, and I instantly knew he was lying.
"You're trying to impress, aren't you?" I knew I had him. He stopped and turned to me.
"Don't say anything," he whispered, slightly embarrassed. "Not a word."
"Who to? I don't know who you're wanting to impress." I laughed.
He looked confused for a second then said, "oh yeah. Good point."

Once we had arrived in the Hall and eaten, it was time for lessons to begin. Adam, I and another of my friends, Will, all had History of Magic and we shuffled to the classroom, going as slowly as we could. We ended up being fifteen minutes late. Strolling into the class with big smirks on our faces, Professor Hadley was not impressed. "Boys, why are you so late?" She questioned angrily, as we stood, trying not to laugh, by the door. "I asked you a question!" She bellowed, and some of the girl's were quite shocked.
"Uh, we, uh... We got lost." Will blurted out without thinking. I did a mental face palm.
"You're fourth years! How could you get lost?"
I decided it was time to butt in. "We were helping some first years find their way and we ended up getting lost. You see, this is a castle, and there are many staircases. It's an easy mistake to make, Professor." I replied in a sarcastic manner, to which some of the class responded with laughter.
"Joshua Hilton!" Professor Hadley screamed, storming towards me. "How dare you speak to me like that! Detention, all three of you. After school tonight! Now take your places." She finished her little rant with a noise of pure disgust, before waddling up to her desk.

The rest of the lesson was quite enjoyable; we studied Albus Dumbledore's life (which, I'll admit, was actually quite interesting) and then the Professor set us homework to write a biography on him, that was due on Wednesday. "It's the first lesson of the year, why does she set us homework?" I complained as Adam and I made our way to Charms. When we got there, Professor Wainwright (who was one of the best Professors at Hogwarts) let us sit wherever we pleased. Of course, Adam and I found a seat at the very back of the classroom, where we talked and messed about for the whole lesson. Unfortunately, we had Charms tomorrow, and Professor Wainwright set us homework that we had no clue how to do.

Nothing much happened during break, and then Adam and I went our separate ways; he had Defence Against the Dark Arts and I had Potions. The dungeons were just as scary as they had been when I was in my first year, and the Professor, Professor Bishop, didn't make them any less frightening. She prowled aimlessly up and down the rows of desks, staring freakishly into the poor faces of her students, making them shake and shiver in fear. She set homework practically every lesson, and didn't care when students complained.

"Come in, come in." She greeted us cheerily in a witch-like manner, in a voice that was obviously put on. "I've got a seating plan all lined up," we'd learned from previous experiences not to show any signs of disgust when we heard that phrase. All of us were gathered at the back of the classroom as she read name after name off her list and allocated each of us a seat. I was last to be called. "And Joshua," she said. I hated being called that. "You'll be next to Joanne," she told me in the most annoyingly delightful way possible.

Begrudgingly, I made my way towards the desk right at the front of the classroom and sat down next to Joanne.
