fractions

what is a fraction = A fraction simply tells us how many parts of a whole we have

now lets know the type of fractions

1. proper fraction = the type of fraction in which the numerator is smaller than the denominator

2. improper fraction = the type of fraction in which the denominator is smaller than the numerator

3. mixed fraction = the type of fraction in which A whole number and a fraction combined into one "mixed" number.

4. complex fraction = the type of fraction in which a fraction with a fraction or mixed number in the numerator or denominator or both — compare simple fraction

5. vulgar fraction = the type of fraction in which. Vulgar fraction, common fraction or fraction is a fraction written in the usual way which is one number (integer) above another (integer) separated by a line

6. decimal fraction = the type of fraction in which the denominator is a multiple of 10

7. like fraction = the type of fraction in which the fractions  have the  same denominator

8. unlike fraction = the type of fraction in which the denominator is not the same

9. equivalent fractions = equivalent fractions can be defined as fractions with different numerators and denominators that represent the same value or proportion of the whole.

now convert a fraction in decimal

like 5/6

simply divide 5 by 6 = 0.83

what about 1 5/6 simply convert it to improper fraction and divide it by 6

11/6

now lets compare fractions and represent fractions on a numberline

lets represent 4/9 and 2 5/9 in a numberline

so 4/9 means 4 parts of a whole so 9/9= 1 , now we know 4/9 will be  between  0 and 1

0-----1/9-----2/9-----3/9-----4/9-----5/9-----6/9-----7/9-----8/9-----1

and 2 4/9 mean 2 wholes and 4 out of 9 parts to reach 3 so we now know 2 4/9 will be between 2 and  3

                                                        *

2-----1/9-----2/9-----3/9-----4/9-----5/9-----6/9-----7/9-----8/9-----3

now lets compare two fraction

how about 4/5 and 7/9

so first lets take the lcm as then we have a common denominator then we can make a equivalent fraction and then compare like this

4/5  7/9

36/45    >    35/45

now if they say to add or subtract take the lcm and make it equivalent and then subtract or add

next is all just understanding the word problems that's all
