All was dark and hushed in the forest; the nearly-full moon cast dappled shadows upon the ground. A young tabby padded carefully through the dense underbrush, praying fervently that the two tiny kits in her jaws would remain silent. She had heard the stories of the wild cats of the lake: many of the loners that came and went spun fanciful tales of epic battles and ghostly ancestors. She wasn't sure how much of these legends were true, but she had to believe in the group known as Thunderclan, the cats who were famous for their kindness toward lonely outsiders —especially kits.

Whatever happens, this is my only choice. She reminded herself fiercely. Her twolegs had taken her previous kits and drowned them in the lake. She repressed a shiver; that memory still haunted her every night. No, this was the only way she could be sure of her precious kits safety. She was sure of it.

A strong whiff of the forest cats touched the young mother's nose. She paused immediately; any closer, and she would face the possibility of facing one or more of the strangers. With a sigh, she set her kits gently on the ground and began digging.

Finally, she managed to scoop out a shallow hole in the ground. She placed her kits in the hole and gave them each a tender lick on the head. "Goodbye, my loves," she whispered. Once she was sure the little ones were asleep, she covered the hole with leaves and left without a backward glance.
