A/N: literally the cheesiest thing I have ever written so far. I feel so nauseous, haha. It's just a short little New Years thing I don't know, I hope it's okay. I just wanted to give you guys something. First one shot of 2015! Happy New Year guys, all my love <3

                              Falling in Love

All around the world, there were people falling in love; people meeting for the first time with awkward smiles and blushes on their cheeks. They could blame the cold weather all they wanted, but they couldn't hide the excitement in their eyes.

I guess I was one of them, and before me was a beautiful man all dressed up in a suit and tie for his twenty-fifth birthday party, which just happened to also be New Years Eve.

His name was Neil and he was Australian, though he didn't have the accent, born and bred in England where his parents moved to when he was just five years old. He had the typical surfer hair - blonde and shaggy. It suited him quite well, falling into his eyes and only just managing to reach out to his cheek bones, that were usually pale and sharp, almost like porcelain.

Tonight, however, as he stared back at me, his cheeks were bright red and I couldn't help but think: are we falling in love? Which was possibly the most stupidest thing I could have ever thought, because 1. you couldn't get more cheesier than that and 2. I wasn't even sure it was possible to fall in love.

But as he stared back at me with those painted red cheeks and the hand crawling up his chest to loosen his tie, I thought it again and again and again and eventually I said, “Would you like to go somewhere quieter for a drink?”

And he replied, “Absolutely, I wasn't sure you'd ever ask,” and so we did. See, we'd known each other for a good few years, working alongside each other. He had just been promoted, so now technically I worked under him. Although he never made it feel any different.

We stopped by the bar to collect two glasses of champagne and then disappeared behind some fancy curtain in this fancy restaurant, which later I found out was the VIP section of the place, with luxury sofas and dining tables and it was all sectioned off for Neil&Party, once they'd finished dancing to the raving songs thumping throughout the building.

For now, it was empty and it was myself and Neil and privacy as we sat with our drinks, our legs crossed over the other. We both knew which team we batted for. It was made pointedly clear the first day we ever met with my stuttering words and hot blushes, unable to meet his eyes; and his quirky smiles and wandering hands, always looking for an excuse to touch me.

I liked to think it had been inevitable that we'd end up somewhere alone together, at some point in time. Right now seemed like the perfect place, with it being Neil's birthday and New Years Eve. It was almost like it was written in the stars.

I felt self-conscious of my quiff, wondering if it had lost its body and looked horrendous while Neil was staring back at me and I almost jumped out of my skin when he said, “Adam, you're stressing me out,” with a laugh.

I took a deep breath, “Is that because I look like I'm about faint?”

    “Pretty much,”

“I'm sorry, it's just that I always get so nervous around you,”

“I know, it's really adorable actually,” he smiled, taking a sip of his drink before reaching a slow hand out towards me, tucking a stray strand of my hair back in the intended style. I hoped he didn't think I'd put too much product in my hair. It probably didn't feel so soft to the touch.

“I really want to kiss you,” I said without intending to. The words left my lips in a whisper-soft lull of words, eyes searching out a reaction inside the sharp green of Neil's gaze. They softened ever so slightly, almost glowing. He looked magical.

“Well, it is almost midnight,” he replied, a subtle smile at the corners of his lips, that he licked away as he grew shy, pulling away from my eyes and fixing his upon his hands, that lay in his lap entwined together.

“That's very true,” and just as the words silenced on my lips, the crowd beyond the VIP room's curtains began to countdown the seconds to midnight. Neil mouthed the numbers, fighting with a smile as he did. I joined in, voice only just audible.

When we hit zero, Neil's palm slid over my cheek and his thumb tucked under my chin before our lips met in a kiss that slowly grew from chaste to hungry, unable to contain our excitement for each other. I melted into the moment, forgot about the outside world.

The only thing I could think about in that moment was the sweet smell of Neil's perfume, and the heat of his mouth as it melded with mine in a smooth, easy rhythm. I had never had a more perfect New Years kiss in all my life.

When he pulled away, I sat still as if I were in a daze for a good few seconds, eyes still closed and lips still pursed. Neil must have found it amusing, as when I finally opened them, he was smiling. He said with a jump to his voice, “I feel like we should leave this party early,”

And I was shocked, to say the least. Because I didn't want to be Neil's first one night stand of the new year, which was the one and only thing that popped into my head when his perfectly shaped eyebrow arched up. I wanted something more than that.

What I wasn't expecting was for him to say: “I'd like to take you to this lovely little restaurant down-town, if you'd let me?” which had me pausing in my thoughts of how do I get out of this? and instead wondering if this was all just part of his game plan to still get me in his bed, or if he was being genuine.

I stumbled over my words, still a little dizzy from the kiss, and eventually said, “You want to take me to dinner?”

And he said, “If you'd like that,”

“Of course I'd like that, it's just that I thought, well,” and now it seemed a little stupid that I had immediately assumed Neil only wanted a one night stand. I felt a prominent blush on my cheeks and hid my face in embarrassment, behind my hands.

    “What is it?” Neil chuckled.

“I thought you were one of those guys...” I muttered, still unable to look at him. I took a deep breath and lowered my hands, sighing and feeling all flustered, “You know, the guys that only want a no strings attached one night-er,”

Neil rolled his eyes in an adorable way before saying, “I thought you knew me better than that, Adam,” he smirked, “I'm not a one night stand kind of guy, and you're definitely worth more than that to me,”

The blushed returned with a ferocity I wasn't prepared for. I felt like a furnace. “Well when you put it that way, it makes me sound like an arsehole for even thinking it,” I joked. Neil chuckled again, then offered me his hand to take as he stood up.

I entwined my fingers with his and he lead me out the building, never once loosening his grip on me. We walked through the streets, or more accurately, we strolled through the streets. The Christmas lights still shining brightly with their cheerful colours.

The city always looked so beautiful this time of the year.

Neil paused in his steps in front of the skyscraper of a Christmas Tree that was standing tall in the centre square of the city, pulling me against his body and wrapping a hand around my waist. His free hand glided over my cheek, thumb tucking again under my chin and I knew exactly what was coming next.

He kissed me in that romantic kind of way that you always dreamed of being kissed. The way you saw it in Disney movies and cheesy rom-coms. It was the kind of kiss that made the tips of your toes tingle and your chest feel all light and ticklish.

And then he pulled away and said softly, “This year is going to be incredible,”

I'd never looked forward to a new year, as much as I did right then. I smiled back at him and whispered with uncontrollable excitement, “Happy New Year,”
