Winter Walks
Snow came down in heavy drifts of white, blurring out the image of two figures that lay making snow angels in the middle of a silent road, lit up only by the row of street lights. Both lads were bundled up in layers and layers of clothing.
Winter sweaters and thermal coats, gloves, scarves, hats because the temperature was the lowest it had been in England's recorded weather history and these two didn't fancy catching themselves pneumonia over the Christmas holidays.
Especially since this was their first Christmas spent together as a couple in their new apartment. They wanted it to be special. Just the two of them with no complications. Catching pneumonia would definitely count as a complication.
And so it was thermal coats and goofy hats that flattened their hair against their foreheads but they didn't care what they looked like around each other because they were in love and they had been for the past two years.
Colton, who was the older of the two at the age of twenty-six, angled his head in the snow to look at his boyfriend, smiling at how adorable he looked, lit up in an orange glow that tanned his face and made his eyes look brighter, more alive.
His boyfriend met his gaze with just as much admiration. Colton said, “Miles, my back is going numb,” before his lips broke into a grin and Miles shook his head, hauling himself upwards, waddling like a penguin as he bent down to help Colton to his feet.
“Thermal coat my ass,” Colton muttered, groaning as he stretched out his back as best he could with all the layers he was wearing. It made it pretty difficult to move at all. They waddled their way back to their new apartment in the city, which was only about twenty minutes away.
Once inside, the two men stripped themselves of their winter outfits and turned the heating all the way up. Colton settled down on the sofa, TV remote already apprehended. He loved Miles to death but he found that his programme choice was absolutely horrendous.
Miles wandered into the room with a gleeful look in his eyes as he held a small box under his arm, wrapped in Christmas paper and ribbons. Colton eyed it suspiciously, “What you got there?” he asked, smirking a little.
“You'll find out on Christmas day,” Miles replied, placing the present with all the others, beneath the enthusiastic Christmas tree. Colton kissed his teeth in disappointment and relaxed back into the sofa.
Their apartment wasn't huge but they didn't want a big one. They wanted a comfy, cosy, snug apartment and that was exactly what they got. Everything was decorated in neutral colours because the two of them couldn't care less about decorating, at least not until they eventually moved into a proper house, perhaps started a family. Adopted a few kids.
It was always Colton's dream to have a family with kids, a few cats and a dog. Maybe even a goldfish, at a push. Miles hated fish. His fears always amused Colton because half the time, they were completely irrational and made absolutely no sense.
Miles settled beside Colton on the sofa, giving his boyfriend the opportunity to throw his feet into his lap as he wiggled further down into the leather couch, TV remote pointed towards the small 32” screen that was framed with red tinsel. His index finger flicked through the channels.
“You're going to take forever looking for something to watch,” Miles muttered, eyebrows depressing, already starting to grow bored. He reached over for the remote saying, “Give it here,”
