I let my eyes wander over our barren campsite as my feet carried me over to the group of conversing parents. The sun rays reflected against the Johnsons’ RV highlighting the peeling paint around the edges and the fading of paint on the side from years of trips. It was a home on wheels; a very out of shape that is. Attached to the back of my dad’s truck was our sleeping headquarters- a trailer consisting of a kitchen, a bathroom, a table that was shorter and narrower than my brothers, and 2 rock hard mattresses. The trailer may have been meant for elf because the trailer’s proportions clearly didn’t fit human, much less 5 of them.
I looked up from my surroundings only to be greeted by a very floral looking shirt. “Vivian,” Mrs. Johnson cooed crushing me into my second bone crushing hug causing me to inhale her very potent old lady perfume. I gagged or at least tried, considering that my face was smashed between her boobs, a very uncomfortable position might I add. It came out sounding like a dying walrus.
“Mom your killing her,” Emma scolds her mother.
“Oh I’m sorry; it’s just so nice to see you again.” I felt her arms unwrap from me, releasing from her arms giving me my chance to breathe again. “Let me look at you.” She took a few steps back raking over my body with her almond shaped eyes. I turn my face to the ground suddenly finding the dirt the most interesting thing in the world, preventing my face from being seen as my pale skin flushed a rosy pink, awkwardly shifting my weight from one foot to the other.
“My o my,” she gasps covering her mouth, “You are so beautiful, almost like the goddess herself. But you must be careful with such beauty comes with great danger,” she warns. "How you are a spitting image of your mother not only in your appearance, but how you treat everything with such respect, she would be so proud if she could see you now..” My eyebrows shot up in bewilderment creating a crease on my forehead; what does she mean when she clearly sees that I look nothing like my mother and what danger is she talking about?
“What do you mean Mrs. Johnson?” I asked confusion laced in my voice. She looked at me with an expression that mimicked my confused one, until she realized what I meant. I looked around to see if the others had caught her words, only to find everyone’s face gone pale like they had seen a ghost. I trained my eyes looking back at Mrs. Johnson who had regained her calm composure.
“Oh that, that was nothing must’ve mixed up my words, you know us old ladies always getting our thoughts and words jumbled together. Vivian how many times have I told you to all me Beth, you make me sound like an old lady,” Beth scolded.
“Beth,” a fake smile plasters my face. I knew she was lying, old lady my as$, she wasn’t even 40 yet, but it didn’t look like I was going to get any answers. My eyes narrowed on my other victims, but before my lips could open to bombard questions to the rest of the group, Mr. Johnson swept me into his arms giving me my third bone crushing hug for the day.
“It’s nice to see you again Vivian,” he said while untangling his arms from around me. He bent down to whisper in my ear, “Between you and me, don’t listen to a thing Beth says, I think she’s loosing it.”
I stifled a laugh, “Right Mr. Johnson.”
“You can call me Jake, no need for the formalities.” Just as I was about to ask Jake questions regarding his wife, Emma stopped me from playing Beckett and interrogating my suspects.
“As much fun as this is, which it’s not, can I and Viv go motorcycling please, I’m going to suffocate from all this tension,” Emma glared at her mother.
“Of course,” everyone agreed in unison. I looked around to see everyone giving an approving nod. I feel so loved.
Emma looks over to my parents giving them a fleeting hug. “Nice to see you again Big D and Olivia,” she says giving them a smile. Unlike me she always calls my parents by their names and she even went to the extremes by giving my dad a nickname.
“Nice to see you again to,” my parents chuckled returning her smile.
“Bye!” Emma shrieked, yanking me out of the situation before you could say “great balls of turkyness.”
“Gees what are you a banshee, I need to hear for the rest of my life. At least give me a warning before you scream an inch from my ear,” I complained rubbing away the ringing in my ears.
“That’s debatable.”
“Thanks love you to.” She winked at me before she continued to walk to her RV. I watched her receding figure as I turned towards my trailer.
As I was shuffling my feet through the dirt giving myself a nice dirt bath, I heard Jake whisper to his wife, “That was to close; you almost destroyed everything we’ve worked so hard on by opening that mouth of yours.” My breath hitched in my throat as my feet tip toed closer to the voices trying to understand what they were saying more clearly. “She must never find out about her past or else she will be a danger to all of us.” I stumbled backwards my foot getting stuck on a rock as all my questions from earlier came rushing back. Questions came popping up in my head almost giving me a head rush. How do the Johnsons know about my past? Why won’t they tell me?
*************
I pushed my baby to 80mph, feeling the wind whip through my hair, probably causing an hour worth of brushing when we return to camp. My electric green motorcycle purred underneath my body as I increased my speed. My white and chartreuse Thor jersey rippled across my chest sending shivers through my body as the wind pierced through the thin fabric. The clear chest protector resting on my chest gave me a sense of security as I pushed my bike to its maximum speed.
After Emma and I had changed into our gear, I realized we had to unload our trailer to get to my bike. Strangely, when I went to go unloading I saw not only my two brothers that don’t do anything, but Jake, Beth, Mom, and Dad already unloading the trailer. I stood feeling dumfounded. They all may as well been wearing signs on their heads saying ‘we don’t want you here go be free.’ After they had finished unburying my bike they nearly shoved me and Emma onto our bikes. Before we had left the campsite, we had been told to take our phones to keep our phones with us, so the parents could keep in contact us during our journey. I wondered why they were all in a hurry to get rid of Emma and me or maybe it was just me.
Pulling me out of my thoughts I glanced down at the ground as I maneuvered around the many shrubs I have maneuvered around. Glancing up I looked at the shrubs and rocks littered ground, we’ve been dodging for the past hour and half. I felt this weird feeling in my stomach that something was going to happen if we didn’t turn back soon. I began to feel lost as we past more mountains of rock and dirt that looked more unfamiliar than the last. I slowed down my bike to get Emma’s attention to tell her we needed to start heading back before the sun set, so we wouldn’t have to face the bitter cold of night.
Craning my head to see where Emma was, it seemed as though the world had slowed down and I was seeing everything in slow motion. I felt my body lurch forward as I looked down to see my front tire land into a pot hole. I then lost feeling of the seat underneath me as I was propelled forward into the air like a bullet.
