"Andi! GET UP!"
Yelled my mum from downstairs as I rolled over in my warm bed. I hate mornings! As I tried to shut the world out and retreat into the darkness calling my name, my mother burst into the room and I could imagine the impatient look on her face.
"Andrea Catalina Isabel Gonsalez! You will get out of that bed right now before I drag you out to the front yard where the neighbourhood can watch you get sprayed by the hose!"
I quickly stumbled out of bed, knowing it was no empty threat, mumbling profanities as I got into the shower.
Half an hour later I dashed down the stairs with my school bag on my back, my hair freshly straightened and my uniform a state of perfection. I grabbed a cereal bar as my brother ushered me out of the house to drive me to school.
"How's work?" I asked curiously as he wasn't in his usual uniform.
"Didn't work out." He stated coolly as he stared out onto the road ahead. I decided not to press it as it was the third job this month to not 'work out' and I knew it was bothering my parents.
"Good luck on your chem test." He said as we pulled into the crowded school gates. I nodded a thank you as I smiled to myself. He remembered.
As I made my way though the bustling hallway I could see a familiar black ponytail standing in front of my locker looking down - presumably at her phone.
"Hey Micky" I greeted as I started organising my books. Michalea Andrews, my best friend since forever, turned around and glowered at the nickname she'd been saddled with.
"Revised for Chemistry?" I asked ignoring the look. She pocketed her phone and shook her head as we walked to registration.
"Couldn't be asked so I'm just gonna wing it. No doubt you studied though?" She smirked. It was sad I know. I'd spent the whole weekend stressing about an end of topic test that didn't count towards our final grade in any way whatsoever! Our exams were slowly approaching and still I had no idea which Uni to pick or what courses to study.
The first three periods flew by and the exam was a breeze so before I knew it, it was lunch time. I sat in the cafeteria and was bombarded by the latest gossip.
"I heard that she threw herself at him at Reece's party last week!" Harley said as I pushed my food around the plate.
"Who?" I asked not remotely interested.
"Angelina Michaels." Whispered Harley oblivious to the fact that I didn't care.
"Not true!" Janice interjected from across the table. "Alice heard from Vicky who heard from Joe who heard from-"
"Get to the point" everyone said in unison - we were all very used to Janice wondering off topic.
"Fine! Basically, there's a rumour that she didn't want anything to happen at all! Apparently she passed out from all the booze and he just carried on whilst she was unconscious!"
We all stared at her in shock and a few of us glanced over at Angie's table as if she would turn and confirm the story.
"That's so sad. No one deserves that." I replied looking down.
"Anyway, onto less depressing topics," someone called from across the table causing everyone to return to normal as if nothing had been said.
We all continued our conversations and had the occasional glares from teachers and students due to our loud laughing but we were used to it.
As I walked home with Micky at my side I listened out for the nearby trains and read all the tags and graffiti that I'd memorised. I could hear Micky humming a song I recognised and quietly joined in. We soon got louder and louder laughing at our tone deaf voices until we could hear yelling around the corner. Quickening our paces we managed to push our way through the crowd to see what was going on. There was a fight between to guys that was quickly getting out of hand. I couldn't see the faces of the guys but I froze when I saw a tattoo that I recognised on one of their arms.
"GO EDDIE!" I high pitched voice screamed and I knew it had to be his irritating girlfriend. I longed to break it up but I knew I wouldn't last two seconds in a fight like that so I just stood by like all the other cheering people. I saw something glisten in the sunlight but it was so fast I couldn't tell if I'd just imagined it. Suddenly there was a loud whimper from the fight and I knew I hadn't imagined it. One of the boys stumbled back and crashed to the ground and a large kitchen knife was embedded in his chest. I was pushes to the ground as people fought to flee from the scene but I managed to crawl forward until I was sitting by the limp man. His emerald green eyes were closed tight and his brown hair blew in the gentle breeze as he tried to stay conscious. I could feel the tears streaming down my face but I couldn't hear anything around me as all I could see was the thick red blood. So much blood.
Everything was happening so quickly but at the same time it was like someone had put us in slow motion. I felt someone pull me away as the paramedics and police flooded the scene and suddenly the world came crashing down on me as realisation flooded my brain. Everything was so loud. The sirens blaring, the same girl who had been cheering earlier was now screaming as mascara streaked her cheeks and my best friend holding me as she stared on in shock. Soon it all became too overwhelming and I found myself struggling to breathe. My inhaler was in my bag across the street where we had been standing and my mouth nor legs were cooperating. I felt myself being dragged into the darkness of my mind as everything slowly went blurry and the last thing I saw was a paramedics face as she shoved something over my mouth.
