The battle was fought between the Hindu empire of Vijayanagar and the armies of four Muslim Deccan Sultanates (Bijapur, Bidar, Ahmednagar and Golconda) in the sixteenth century.  The leader of the United Sultanate, Ali Adil Shah, demanded the forts of Raichur and Mudgal from Ramarai, the then ruler of Vijayanagar.  When the demand was rejected by Ramrai, the combined army of the sultans of the south advanced towards Talikota, 80 km southeast of Bijapur, where on 26 January 1565, a fierce battle between the Ramrai and the United Sultanate forces began.  In the initial moments, the combined Sultanate army was seen to be defeated, but in the last time, the use of cannons led to a joint army of Muslims wreaking havoc on the Vijayanagara army, resulting in seventy-year-old Ramarai being surrounded and killed in the battlefield itself.  After this the princely state of Vijayanagar was mercilessly looted.  This war is counted among the disastrous wars of Indian history.  In the opinion of historians, this war was fought in 'Talikota', but the real area of this war was the area between Rakkasa and Tangdi villages, situated on the banks of Krishna River.  For this reason, it is also known as Rakkasa - Tangdi's War
