It was a gorgeous autumn morning, the sky was clear and the air was crisp. Thanksgiving was a week away and houses all over were packed with friends and family from all over, but not for Sarah. Her house was practically empty, it was just her, her parents, and her brother, Troy, who was 18 and was in his freshman year in college. They weren't all that close because he basically spent all his time either in his room or out with friends. Her parents were fine and all but they were really strict so she didn't really like having friends over, not that she had many friends to invite. She was 13 and in 8th grade but she had only one friend, Anna, who was the exact opposite of her. Sarah was on the shy side, loved reading and staying home and watching Netflix, while Anna was outgoing and was never seen sitting still. She was always going somewhere, whether it was the park by their school or Wendy's. She was one of the more popular girls at school, she always told Sarah that she was her 'best' friend but Sarah wasn't sure anymore. I mean, whenever Anna asked her to Sarah would go with her to hang out but she could tell they were drifting apart.

Sarah was outside this morning, she had decided to go to her backyard and curl up in her hammock outside with her book, "A Dog's Journey" by W. Bruce Cameron. She was just about to start Max's life when she hears a twig snap. She looks up and sees a dog, it's big and fluffy with a black, brown, and white coat. She sees that it has huge paws and realizes that it looks really young, probably still a puppy. She walks over to it and sees that it has no collar. She knows that her parents would never let her have a dog but she decides to take it into her house and give it a bath, her mom was at the store and her dad was at work. Her brother was out wherever, probably at a friends house so she was home alone. She took it inside and gave it a bath, scrubbing all of the dirt off of it and she brushed out its long fluffy coat. Once it is dried off, she realizes that it's a Bernese Mountain Dog puppy (she had a thing for dog breeds) and she decides that she should take it to the vet to make sure that it's healthy. She had saved up some money so she could most likely pay for the visit.

She luckily had a pet store nearby so she stopped there and bought some puppy food, a leash, and a collar. She paid for the items and brought them back home, where the puppy was waiting. She stored the food in her closet and put the collar and leash on it and walked it to the vet, which was a couple of blocks in the opposite direction. When she got there the lady at the front desk piped up, "Hi! I'm Donna! Do you have an appointment?" Sarah responded,

"Actually, I found this puppy in my backyard and was wondering if I could bring it in for a check-up, just to see how healthy it is and everything and to check for a microchip. I believe it's a Bernese Mountain Dog."

"Of course, we're not very busy right now so you can drop it off and wait in the waiting room. This is a pretty simple check-up, we'll probably just give it a few shots and check up on its health. Can I have your name?"

"I'm Sarah" she replied.

"We'll call you back when we're done. Ok honey?"

"Yes ma'am," she replied. "Thank you!" The lady wrote some notes and walked the dog into the back. Sarah sat down in a chair in the waiting room and pulled out her phone. She saw 3 missed calls from her mom typical mom she thought. She called her back and her mom picked up instantly.

"Hi, honey! You had me worried sick! You weren't answering any of my calls!"

"Oh, sorry mom. I was in the backyard reading, I forgot my phone inside."

"Oh, that's alright dear. Just don't do that again, ok? I was calling to ask you if you wanted any ice cream, it's on sale."

"Sure! Mint chocolate chip?"

"Yep. Ok, sweetie. Stay safe! Don't let any strangers in!"

"I won't," Sarah laughed. "Love you, Mom, bye!"

"Bye, dear!" She hung up and started watching Netflix on her phone, reading the captions. Then, she heard a door open and looked up. She saw who she assumed was the vet walk out of the door.

"Sarah?" the man called. Sarah stood up and walked back. She walked into a room where the puppy was sitting on the vet table, panting happily. The man turned to Sarah and gestured for her to sit down. Sarah obliged and sat in one of the plastic chairs up against the wall. The vet started talking.

"So, Sarah. You were right. This is a Bernese Mountain Dog, about 3 months old. She seems to be in good health. We would like you to bring her back in about another 3 months to spay her so she can't have puppies. Is that alright with you?"

"Yes sir," Sarah responded.

"Alright, since this was just a check-up and standard procedures, the cost is $50. Can you handle that?" Sarah reached into her pocket and pulled out her wallet. She grabbed 2 twenties and a ten and handed them to the vet. He pushed her hand away.

"I'll need you to give that to Mrs. Donna, the lady at the front desk. Ok?" Sarah nodded and he smiled.

"Just letting you know, getting her spayed is a bit pricier, about $500. Is that ok?"

Sarah takes a sharp breath and thinks for a moment. She has about $200 now, after paying for the bill today that'll be $150. She could probably do a dog walking business or something plus her allowance and make it up to $500. "I think so," she responds as peppy as she can. The vet looks at her sort of worriedly and hands her the leash. He also walks to a cabinet and pulls something out. He walks back and hands her a tag.

"This is the rabies tag. Put this on the collar so people will know she's up to date on her rabies shots."

"Thank you," Sarah replies, clipping the tag to the loop on her collar.

"You should also get her an identification tag. If you want, when she comes to get spayed we can microchip her. That's free of charge."

"Thank you," Sarah replied. The vet opened the door for her and she walked out with the puppy on hand. She walked up to the front desk and gave Donna the $50. She thanked Sarah and Sarah walked out of the vet and walked home. When she got back it was about 3:00. She looked at her phone and her mom had texted her heading home about five minutes ago. Sarah replied Ok. See you soon! :) and put her phone down. She looked down at her new dog and said,

"What am I going to do with you girl?" She then heard a voice in her mind that said

Well, I could go back in the woods and you could bring me more of that amazing food! Sarah, startled, looked around. She only saw the puppy, sitting at her feet wagging her tail.

"Did you just talk to me?"

Well, I didn't technically talk to you. I'm in your mind! It's called telepathy. I saw you sitting in your hammock and I sensed that you were perfect for me. See...

Sarah cut her off. "Wait. Hold on. You can talk to me? What in the world? Let me guess, you even have a name? And you need me to take care of you?"

Well, one of those was correct. My name is Willow, but I don't need you to take care of me. I need your help to save the world.
