I looked out my window admiring the trees and the many different coloured birds that flew by, taking in the fresh scent of the morning.
I leaned into the window, with my cup in my hand and my brush in my mouth, desperately longing to be away from here.
Away from my excuse of a life.
Lady Margherita had warned me about brushing by the window but I guess it's already a habit.
Bad habits die hard.
The sunrise was beautiful and electrifying, succulent with hope.
It was a good thing.
And I deserved a good thing.
I deserved good things.
And this sunrise was the only good thing I could lay my eyes on this beautiful morning.
There was a knock on the door and then it swung open. Typical Lady Margherita.
You would think she did it on purpose, but I think that's how she was taught to knock.
"Is it morning already", Laura said yawning. She raised her head up from her pillow and shut her eyes as the rays from the Sun hit her sea blue eyes.
"Yes it is my dear. And its also Monday, you know what that means. You will be leaving Brooklyn today, so get ready", Lady Margherita said and then turned her attention to me.
She eyed the cup and toothbrush in my hands and didn't seem to have a surprised look on her face. I wasn't really one of the obedient kids around here.
I won't say I'm a kid, infact am not.
Just a 19 years old woman, yes I can be classified as a woman-i can bear children, who never got to finish college due to some unavoidable complications and interests.
Apparently I am and I quote "a child sent from the pit of hell to ruin her establishment".
"Give us a moment Laura, would you?" she said not breaking eye contact with me.
"But I haven't brushed my teeth, I could just stay in the bathroom till you're done", Laura said fully awake and on her feet.
"I just need to have a word with your roommate here, in private", she said and that was it.
Laura slipped into her flip flops and left the room leaving me with the Wife of the Devil to tend to.
"Catherine Catherine Catherine, you never seem to learn", she said walking to and fro across the room.
"Good Morning Lady Margherita", I said standing up straight and pausing my brushing.
"What's good about the morning, huh? There's nothing good about it when your around", she said and brought out a rolled paper out of her pocket. I could guess what it was.
My Daily List of Chores.
What can I say, I'm really loved around here.
Note my sarcasm.
"So here's the list of things I need you to do for me", she said smiling devilishly and handing me the list.
I take it from her not opening it to see its contents.
"You're not taking her to college are you?", I ask looking her dead in the eyes.
"Oh you mean Laura? She's such a sweet girl isn't she?", she smiles and sat on our bed side.
I mentally set a reminder to change the sheets after she was gone.
"And she's really beautiful too. I can't let such beauty go to waste can I now? I'm simply helping her get the best she can out of life", she said putting her hands together and having a satisfied look on her face. I wanted to spit on it.
"By selling her of to become a prostitute!", I said raising my voice.
I had overheard Lady Margherita talking to someone on her phone a week ago when I was cleaning her chamber/office/scheming room.
They were talking about Laura.
I could tell because Laura was the only 16 years old blonde, blue eyed girl with gap teeth and smooth curves in the whole dorm.
"You do know, that as much as I see it as being disrespectful and I don't like it, yelling at me would only make matters worse. How do you think she would feel finding out about this whole situation now from the way you are shouting like a toothless dog. Well of course finding out wouldn't change anything but you don't want your last memory of her to be her soft cheeks damped with tears would you?", she said standing up from the bed.
I didn't know what to do. I felt tied up and hopeless. Laura was going to be sold into prostitution without even realising it and I couldn't do anything.
"The deed's already done Catherine, transactions completed, everything sorted out, don't worry your little head, she'll be fine. It only gets better from here", she smiled at me and headed for the door.
"And yes, I technically wasn't lieing. She will go to college. You could just call her a college prostitute", she said and slammed the door as she left.
