Something To Look Forward To

The next day, Cadence rose with the sun, as she usually did, desperate to get out of  her family's house. She snuck into the kitchen to grab some breakfast. She put some toast on and went to the fridge to grab the honey, the pantry for some cinnamon and the fruit bowl for a banana. She put them on the bench and grabbed a plate and a knife. Placing them down, she sighed, thoughts drifting back to last night as she waited for the toast to cook.

Ever since the incident at the Museum of Stolen Moments in their 1st year at Wunsoc, Morrigan, Hawthorne and Cadence had been inseparable. The three were best friends. This was their 5th year at Wunsoc and they still got themselves into strange situations, nearly as if they never learn their lessons. Cadence loved them both dearly, Morrigan as a best friend, nearly a sister and Hawthorne also as a best friend, a brother... but that had changed over the past year. Cadence was nearly convinced that she was in love with Hawthorne Swift.

Poomf!

Her toast popped up, startling her out of her thoughts. She spread the honey onto the crisp toast, sliced the banana on top and sprinkled a little bit of cinnamon to finish it off. She put the ingredients away then sat down at the table, glancing up at the clock. Five to six. She had five minutes to finish her food before her Mum woke up and started her day. She quickly finished her toast and began to walk to the bathroom to brush her teeth.

Cadence P.O.V.

I only just got back to my room in time. As soon as I heard my Mum's alarm, I bolted, heading straight for my room. I sat down to breathe for a moment before searching my cupboard for my uniform. Why was I avoiding my Mum? Because she tends to forget me. A lot. So why do I avoid her if she normally doesn't realise I'm there?  Because it's easier than trying to dodge her when she does remember my existence.

I tied my boots and grabbed my hairbrush, time to tame the untameable. My hair isn't... difficult as such, but long and thick, making it seem so. I sat on my bed, gazing out the window as I braided my hair. I hope today will be okay. I often worry about that... my home life definitely isn't okay. But when I'm with Unit 919, I feel myself, I feel free, I feel emotions that I usually don't feel. I can't wait to see them all again. Only 15 minutes until I can go through the door in the living room.

My Unit is an interesting one - we have a Gastronomist, a Healer, a Fighter, a Linguist, a Pickpocket, a Radar, a Dragonrider, a Mesmerist and a Wundersmith. And who would've thought that we'd all get along? I was sure we wouldn't at first. Mainly because of me and my knack but then because of Morrigan being a Wundersmith... then Lam being a princess from the Republic. But none of us cared anymore and we're all really close. Hawthorne was right last night. They are my family.

I check my clock again. Ugh... 5 more minutes... this sucks. I can hear the house slowly waking up. I can hear Katie asking if anyone's seen her socks (I may or may not have mesmerised Stella into painting them), Stella throwing things around in search of her art-book (has she checked under the couch?), Grandpa searching for his newspaper (I have nothing to do with it's disappearance, he's just got bad sight), Stephanie trying to cook and obviously faili-

Oh! It's time for school! I sneak out of my room and into the living room. I press my finger to the little glowing circle to open the door and I run through, shutting it quickly behind me and opening the next one. As soon as I reach the platform, I feel safe and at home. I just sat down when I heard another door open. It should be Morrigan - she usually turns up after I do - so I turn around to greet her, "Hey!"

"Hello! How was your weekend?" I was right, it was Morrigan, smiling brightly and eager to be here.

"Eh, the usual.. how was yours?"

"Oh... it was pretty fun, we had a food fight... Chef wasn't too impressed."

I laughed upon the news, the staff and permanent residents of the Hotel Deucalion sure do get into some fun (and funny) situations.

We began talking about the usual - how the Hotel was going, what pranks the both of us had pulled on our families over the weekend, but then Morrigan's eyes lit up and she looked as though she had just remembered something.

"Oh! Frank is hosting some supposedly grand ball next Saturday night and I was wondering if you and the rest of the Unit would like to come?"

"Sounds great!"

Finally, an escape.. and something to look forward to!
