CHAPTER ONE- 31 FLAVORS
Brrnng! Brrnng! Brrnng! Grace sighed as she listened to the sound of the first period late bell reverberating in her ears from the loudspeaker in the classroom. She dropped her navy blue Jansport beside her desk, then sank into her chair, lacking all enthusiasm. United States History II. Honors.
Yawn.
Her second least favorite subject as a senior at FHS. The only thing that dragged her out of the doldrums was her perky friend, Bailey. She was a junior and a varsity cheerleader. She was always full of lightness and laughter.
The very thing Grace required to plug along for the next fifty-five minutes and thirty- two seconds.
"Goooood morning, Fairview High!" came the sound of her classmate, Thomas Jenkins' voice over the PA system. "Today we will be canceling all outdoor practices due to the impending weather conditions. All indoor activities shall remain as scheduled. Please stand for 'The Pledge' and pause for a moment of silence and a thought for the day...."
"Shit." thought Grace. "More rain. So much for hitting the beach after school this week! What a drag." She tried to mentally devise a Plan B, but was distracted by the slight creaking of the classroom door.
Bailey.
Grace gave her the "okay" sign, and Bailey ducked down in an instant.
She snuck into the room quietly, and slipped into her seat beside Grace in the nick of time. Mr. Lafoe didn't seem to notice. He was still chugging his last few sips of coffee, and shoving an Entenmann's crumb cake down his throat while taking roll. He hummed to himself, obliviously placing tiny ink checks along his meticulous taupe clipboard.
Bailey turned toward her friend, and contorted her face when he paused to brush off his bristly mustache and pink Polo shirt.
"He is so vile. I swear, just watching him eat makes the chunks rise in my throat." she whispered. She began to force her index finger down her throat.
Grace smirked at her friend feigning nausea.
She introduced gagging noises, and Grace burst into laughter. Mr. Lafoe looked up from his clipboard and studied her.Carefully.
"Is there a problem, Miss Hannity?" Grace cleared her throat, and Bailey quickly recovered herself while the rest of the class recited The Pledge of Allegiance.
Bailey replied in a snarky tone, "Uh, yeah. Perhaps more than a few." He raised his eyebrows with curiosity. Grace delivered a murderous look to Bailey. She retorted with a roll of her heavily-lined doe eyes.
"Well, if that's the case, then I'll happily write you a pass to go and speak with Ms. Kendricks in the Guidance office!" he offered with his pen raised in the air.
