Chapter 46- Guilty As Charged

Bailey took a deep breath before she answered Gavin. His voice was laced with venom and she knew her excuse would sound pathetic. It was a feeble attempt, but she would honor it in attempt to save face.

"Yeah, we had fun. I mean, a couple of beers, no biggie. Chase wasn't up for a swim." she smirked. "Did you actually think I'd let this guy stray far when he'd been drinking like a fish? Especially after the 'bonfire' incident? He needed a chaperone." she lied.

Gavin saw through her like a pane of glass. He rolled his eyes.

"Yeah, well, judging by the looks of the bottom half of that dress, I'd say you provided more than than just chaperoning. Whatever ruffles your truffles, Gurl. If you like your ex-bestie's leftover's, I say 'go for it'." he snickered and turned back toward Ryan's truck.

"SHIT!" Bailey silently screamed. The split in her dress was facing front!

 An idiot could see that.

She'd been caught and she knew it. She looked at Chase to provide some sort of redemption.

"Cool off, Steehl. You don't have dibs on Bailey. She's free to do as she pleases. Maybe she just wanted to help out a friend tonight. Sorry if it knocked your massive ego down a few pegs." he quickly glanced at her and then scanned the faces in front of him. Ryan paused for a brief second.

 He waited for Gavin's comeback.

"Looks like she already has! No worries, Cooper. I'm just glad your broken heart has been mended. It only took...two hours?" he fired sarcastically. Becca glared at Bailey and shook her head.

"Do you both know we've been scared to death wondering where the hell you've been? They have YOUR dad, Mr. Morrison and Coach Fullman looking for you. Isn't that just peachy? Better start rehearsing a better line. You're in deep shit." She followed Gavin, and left Ryan to face them with very little sympathy.

"Look" he began. "I don't give a damn what you two were doing down here. But, I do know that you gave me your word that you'd stay put in the driveway. You not only left, but you didn't answer your phone, my mom called your dad and now Fullman's out on the hunt for you two? The cherry on top of a complete clusterfuck of a night!" He scoffed and marched back up the dirt path leading to his pickup.

Bailey and Chase exchanged glances. He shrugged.

"Meet ya back at your place?" he suggested nonchalantly.

Ryan answered, "Yeah, whatever. We'll be there, man. Get in touch with your dad, though. They're worried sick at this point. Tell them to call off the search party."

"I'm on it. We're right behind you guys." Chase said and reached into the Excursion for his cell phone. He let out a heavy breath when he looked at the screen.

 Nine missed calls!

"Hop in, Bail. We've got to bounce. I fear an ass-chewing is in our near future. Let's roll."

She climbed back into the passenger side of the truck and turned to Chase.

"I dont' give a crap what Gavin says to anyone. I'm sticking to our story." she said.

Bailey leaned over and straightened the bottom of her dress, returning the split to its original position. She knew she was an absolute wreck. She felt self-conscious in that moment which was so unlike her. She waited for Chase to speak to take her mind off of her appearance.
