Skylar Ross

I sat against the rim of the window, watching a raindrop glide down the glass. The rain hit the window like someone was chucking pebbles at it. Suddenly, a loud clap of thunder resulted in me wincing. Its boom echoed through my bedroom causing a chill to run down my spine. But even that didn’t get me to separate my tear-stained cheek away from the glass.

Today is May 8th.

Today is Drew’s birthday.

Every year, Mia and I would plan something special for him. Our birthdays were always celebrated with surprises, and gifts, and parties. Our birthdays were always celebrated together.

My best friend’s pass had made every day more and more dreadful. And today is just another day to burn another hole into my heart. I don’t have anyone to surprise, I don’t have anyone to share a gift with, and I certainly don’t have anything to party for. If only Drew were here, everything would be better. I want nothing more than to just simply see him smile again—that cheeky grin he’d always have when Mia and I cover his face with frosting as he attempted to cut his cake.

“Skylar?” A soft voice said, snapping me out of my thoughts.

I peeled open my eyes, not realizing that they were closed this whole time. Slowly rotating my head over my shoulder, I found Mia standing at the door.

A low sigh escaped my lips, as I stood back up on my feet. My gaze landed back at the dark-haired girl whose eyes looked just as tired as mine. Her once shining emerald green orbs were now a shade of deep mossy-green. The tip of Mia’s nose was red from blowing her nose too much, and her eyes were as well, from crying.

I fell into her arms, allowing her to embrace me with a warm hug. I so badly wanted to burst out into tears again, but I held myself together. We promised we’d be strong for Drew, because he wouldn’t want to see us like this. I know that somewhere above, he’s watching over us; and breaking down every second is not what he’d want.

“Hey,” Mia’s soothing voice whispered. “Stay strong, remember?”

I pulled away from her warmth, nodding my head. “Yea. We can’t just spend every minute of our lives like this.”

A slight smile blossomed across her face, but I knew it was forced. Every time I smile now, it always seemed to be fake—everything has been so fake since Drew passed away. Every “sorry” I’ve received never held any meaning. Every “everything’s going to be okay” someone’s told me is always a lie. And now, every smile I flash doesn’t mean I’m happy. In fact, it doesn’t mean anything.

“But, it’s his birthday, Mia...” I murmur. “He would have turned 17 today.”

“I know, Skylar. I know it hurts to think about these things.” Placing her hands on my shoulders, Mia locked her eyes with mine. “But that’s why we’re staying strong. Because May 8th is only gonna pass every single year, and we can’t be like this forever.”

My eyes dropped to the floor. “How are you doing this?” Swallowing down the lump in my throat, I dragged my gaze back up at Mia. “How are you keeping yourself together?”

Mia shut her eyes for a moment, before slowly opening them again. “I’m not.” Sighing, she took a seat at my computer desk. “On the inside, I’m killing myself. Every time someone brings him up, I just wanna fall to the floor and cry. But I can’t. And you can’t either, Skylar.”

All of a sudden, my computer screen lit up. Mia spun her chair around, as I made my way over to the computer.
