The news of a Japanese tsunami came in the summer of Daisy Moran's sixteenth year. It killed eleven. Though Daisy didn't know it, the blood was on her hands.
Daisy was tough. She presented a harsh exterior to the world and never showed weakness.
The girl had critical grey eyes, and high cheekbones sprinkled with freckles.
It was a humid Sunday morning when Daisy woke to a dusty orange light that streamed through the bay windows overlooking the farm. Cracking her knuckles, she slid out of bed and swept her long hair into a tight ponytail.
"Morning," Old Pa murmured from his place at the stove as he made breakfast.
"G'Morning, Pa." Daisy answered. Sliding onto the couch, she flicked on the TV. She appeared unshaken by the news of the tsunami, which had struck overnight. Old Pa deposited a bacon and egg sandwich on the coffee table. "Thanks."
"Strewth." Old Pa said, taking a bite of his own sandwich as he watched the news story unfold before him. They finished their sandwiches and Old Pa stood, brushing off his worn overalls.
"Crops need waterin'. There's a hell of a lot to do today, my girl."
Daisy stood and wiped her arm across her forehead.
"It's gonna be a bloody hot one."
