Afraid of the Dark
I have never been afraid of the dark.
The door closes,
The lights go out,
And I can finally think.
I can let all of the worries shrink.
I can allow my thoughts to change.
Peace can greet me.
Even on the worst nights,
I've never been afraid of the dark.
I broke.
I turned on the snowflake lights,
Their dim glow at the end of my bed.
I didn't turn them off to sleep.
To think.
To breathe.
I became afraid of the dark.
For one night,
I couldn't face the dark.
All of the secrets were terrifying.
The thoughts were too much,
And I wanted them to disappear.
To leave me in peace.
To let me go.
I am afraid of the dark.
