CH 1
I'm in a city, I think, San Francisco because I can see its famous bridge not far away, but I can't see farther than that because of the darkness mixed with fog. There's a small bit of light around me from the full moon, and as terrifying as it is, it's also kind of peaceful. Until I feel the suddenly strong wind, throwing my hair behind me and making me take a step back. It's not a normal wind, but instead comes in waves, and the sound of giant beating wings along with it. As the giant shadow comes closer, I make out the shape of the dragon. It's huge, a of the not-so-gentle-giant. I've only seen a few that are this big. It's one of those that compares to the giant cathedrals and temples that you see in the bigger cities. It rises well above me, dark as the night around it, except for the little red light, growing until I see the mouth that holds the fire. It flies at me, and I wake up.
I'm gasping for breath, and my hair is sticking to my forehead from the sweat. I sit until my breathing is calmed down, then, as to not wake Jess, I wash my face off in the bathroom. It's still dark, almost 2 in the morning. I think back to the dream. That was horrible. I love the dragons, and although I've seen some of the feral ones that refuse to mingle with humans, I've never seen anything like that. The feral packs are usually made up of smaller, more stubborn dragons. Most are about the size of a Clydesdale horse. That's why I was a little surprised to find out that Jess lets hers wander around her house, but I'm the guest, so I can't really complain.
Like the mind reader that he probably is, I think he knows I'm thinking about him because when I look back to the doorway, there he is. Zipper, as he is named for his lightning reflexes, sits up as tall as he can in the doorway, with his blue-green scales glowing slightly yellow in the bathroom light.
"Hey buddy." I say quietly, wiping my face with a towel. "Don't worry, it was just a bad dream." He tilts his head. Most dragons have proved to be smart; a lot of them, if not born around humans, will hang around us, and they'll actually learn our language. Of course, they can't speak it, but they can understand us, and we've learned to understand them. "It's fine, really. Nothing serious." I assure him. He glowers down at me, then moves from the doorway so I can go back to the guest room. I pat his neck on the way out.
The next morning, I wake to Jess's voice. "Lyric! You awake?" I groan, which is enough of an answer for her. "Okay, I'm gonna take Zip out, I think he's been cooped up a little too long. Will you be okay here alone?" I groan again, and she laughs. "Okay, I might be back a little late, so you know where the food and everything is." I give her a thumbs-up, and a few seconds later the front door closes. Jess does competitions with Zip, and when she's not doing that, she's either doing the same with her horses or training horses for other people. I try to go back to sleep, but now I can't. The sun's shining in my face, and no matter how many pillows and blankets I curl up under, the light still manages to get in. With a frustrated sigh, I sit up and look around the guest room. It's pretty nice, aside from having my clothes scattered everywhere. I'm lucky that Jess gave me a place to stay. She's only 18, almost 19, but her parents are rich enough that they helped buy her a house once she graduated. Yeah. They basically bought her a house.Anyway, I'm only 15, and I don't know her all that well, but our parents were friends, so when mine went out to 'discover the world', as they called it, Jess offered to give me a place to stay.
Now here's the thing with the dragons. Of course, they didn't always exist. About 16 years ago, some scientists were experimenting, planning on bringing back dinosaurs, or at least a close copy of them. You've probably seen Jurassic Park, so I'm sure you know that it didn't turn out exactly as planned. Something weird happened, and instead of the T-Rex and Brachiosaurs, dragons were made. I've heard they were trying to mix genes, most likely Pterodactyls with some kind of carnivore, given the dragons' appearances. At first it was like a full-scale war, humans against dragons, like those fantasy books. Another thing to know about dragons is that they each have their own personalities. Back then, none were born in captivity, although even now I wouldn't call it that. They live with us and we live with them. But some, usually the wild ones who don't bother with people, can make an attachment to one certain person. And unlike some of the dragons born around us, who can move from person to person, the dragon and person attached to each other can rarely be separated. A lot of the ones we live with are like the dogs and horses we have around as well; they can get attached, some more than others, but they can also do it with multiple people.
Two years after the fighting started, a man shot down a dragon, and according to witnesses it was a feather, a dragon with a feathered tail and wings(we try to keep the names for them simple.) He was going to kill it, but when he was close enough, instead of fighting back, it layed down and looked him in the eyes. He'd seen the understanding and acceptance the dragon had that it would die, and he realized that there might be more to them than the vicious killing. So he helped it. He removed the bullet from under the scale it had dug into, right there in that now-abandoned building, and he stopped the bleeding and ended up staying there that night. The dragon laid its head on his lap, and he knew there might be a chance to end the fighting. Obviously, he did it, but he wasn't able to fix what had already been destroyed. And even now when we've got our electricity and few vehicles, mostly for the military, the city of Chicago and probably many others got invaded by vegetation. Even after rebuilding the cities, people decide to keep most of the vegetation around, mostly for the dragons. I'm sure that most of the cities'
residents enjoy it as well.******************************************************************
