"Wake up Keefe. Please, you have to wake up."
Sophie was sitting on a cot directly next to Keefe's in the Healing Center at Foxfire, exactly where she had been since she brought him in. It had been almost a month since the battle at Loamnore, almost a month since King Enki's betrayal. Almost a month since Lady Gisela put HER OWN SON in a comma.
A fresh wave of anger and hate flooded her senses. Her vision turned red and she started violently shaking. "Sophie, get a grip." She chided herself. Concentrating she grappled with her emotions and shoved them into the dark corners of her mind. Sophie double checked that Sandor and Ro were still posted outside the door and had sensed nothing out of the ordinary.
"That was way to close." Sophie thought.
Several instances like that had been happening over the past month, getting more and more frequent by the day. She hadn't told anyone though, everyone had more important things to worry about then the Moonlark's out of control emotions.
Sophie's gaze returned to the boy next to her.
The Hair was plastered to his forehead with sweat. His tunic was wrinkled and his teeth were clenched together. His mind was still completely blank, Sophie had probed through his mind multiple times every day and always found the same thing...nothing. When she wasn't probing, she was transmitting.
She sent him all the happy memories she had with him. When they flew on Silveny's back, when they went to meet Greyfall, all the nights that they had a sleepover in the treehouses, the list went on and on.
"So, how is the Keefester?"Sophie jumped a foot in the air and drew her throwing star before she realized it was her best friend.
"Holy mallowmelt, you gave me a heart attack Dex!" Sophie yelled as she tackled him with a hug. When she pulled away Dex was grinning, dimples and all. But his face fell as soon as he saw hers. (The reason I chose Dex for this is he is the most underrated character in all of history. Him and Marella.)
"Sophie, when was the last time you slept?"
Her silence was enough of an answer for him.
"Sophie, why haven't you been sleeping? You look worse then Keefe at this point."
Everytime Sophie tried to sleep, nightmares came of Keefe screaming at Sophie that it was her fault that he was in a coma. She bite her lip, crossed her arms in defiance and replied, "Sleep isn't very high on my priority list right now."
Dex looked at her with such concern in his eyes that Sophie felt her resolve crumble a little.
"My parents put you up to this didn't they."
Every other day that she had been at the Healing Center her parents had come to talk to her. The topics varied from trying to get Sophie to eat or sleep more to updates on Team Valiant. Sophie had temporarily relinquished leadership to Bianna so that she could always give her full attention to Keefe. There wasn't much to report though, the Neverseen had gone back to whatever hole they lived in to wait for the next move.
