Blackout

It's dark, but it's not cold.

For once, the world is quiet.

There's no noise, no artificial lights, no T.V's.

Everything is shut down.

And for a brief moment, everything is just peaceful.

How long has it been since the world was this quiet?

The stars that were once unnoticed, have finally been seen.

They shine a lot brighter without all those fake city lights over throwing their glow.

I can hear nothing, except the gentle sound of the humming night crickets that is music to my ears.

I grabbed a stainless metal lantern and lit up a candle before heading out the balcony.

The wind was nice and chilly, the neighbourhood was lit up by the full moon and a billion stars dancing in the night sky.

I wonder what everyone else is doing now?

"THIS IS NICE" I say to myself as I began to drift off.

When I awoke, it was only 10 o'clock in the evening, I've only slept for thirty minutes but it felt like hours.

I had a nice little dream. It was about my childhood, my dad was still there and he handed me a big red box with a sparkly golden ribbon tied to it.

I remember that box, inside it was one of my most favorite things in the world.

My ugly duckling.

It was a yellow duck plush toy that had something hard on it's stomach, and when you press it, it goes "quack! quack!"

It's been so long since I had a dream about my dad. He passed away 5 years ago.

I was very close to him, since I was a bit tomboyish growing up.

We had a lot in common.

We loved watching cartoons and Japanese anime together, reading, playing around the house, and we really enjoyed blackouts together.

When I was a kid I used to live in a very remote area in our province. It was very very far away from the city, so far that you even have to ride a small motor boat across the ocean to get there.

The supply of electricity was rather poor in that area, given how far away it is, so we would experience blackouts quite often.

But electricity wasn't a big deal there, since there was no internet or cellphone reception, some houses would have T.V's to watch the news on, but it only ever had one channel and people barely watched noon time shows or drama's, they just watched, well... the news. Sometimes, we'd even get through a whole week without electricity and it never bothered anyone.

Ever since I moved to the city, I haven't been experiencing any blackout's except for sometimes when there would be a strong typhoon or a zombie apocalypse.

The first one already happened, the second one hasn't yet.

But tonight, we're somehow experiencing a power outage from out of the blue.

I can hear some of my neighbours complaining, can't blame them though this was very unexpected. We didn't even prepare to have our phones or laptops charged, so we were left with nothing to do.

Luckily, I'm not the type who gets bored easily.

In fact, I actually quite like this.

Just me, the stars, and good old nature spending some quality time.

This make me feel so nostalgic.
