Dis and Thorin had been arguing for hours on end, shattered plates surrounded their feet as Dis burst into tears. “Why must you take them from me? Can’t you just be happy with that we have” she cried into her hands as Thorin looked at her blankly. The young brothers Fili and Kili had been hiding in the corner arms wrapped around each other in comfort as the younger of the two cried into his brother’s chest.

“They are Durin it is their blood to reclaim the mountain once they get older” Thorin murmured tilting his sister’s face up and wiping away her tears with his rough hands.

“I don’t want to lose you or them” she whispered burying her face into his chest sobbing uncontrollably. Thorin turned towards the two trembling boys and sighed heavily “I will not make you go but it is up to you.”

Dis stopped crying and looked at her young son’s through her tears lacing her fingers together as though praying. Fili stood up abruptly and left his brother alone walking over to his uncle looking up at him through big bright eyes.

“When the time comes uncle I will be by your side” he said clearly as he bowed his head. Dis watched her oldest son through new eyes and could see what had Thorin had tried to make her see. Fili was a prince and indeed had the same pride Thorin did while Kili was different.

The younger of the two stayed in the corner crying uncontrollably torn between his love for his mother and his duty towards his uncle. “And you Kili” Thorin murmured softly watching him with darkened eyes.

Kili responded by standing upright, wiping his eyes furiously and hanging his head low “I HATE YOU ALL” Kili yelled bunching his small hands into fists “Y-you promise you would n-ever leave us” he sobbed as he ran off to his shared room and slammed the door.

The other stood in shock as Fili began to run to his brother but Dis held him back “Fili stay with your uncle I will speak to him.” The blonde haired prince nodded and clutched at his uncle’s robes as his mother slowly entered their room. “Kili” she called out softly and noticed his small figure curled up under the covers as he cried into his pillow his fragile body trembling in sadness.

“Oh Kili” she whispered softly pulling him onto her lap holding her beloved son close to her heart. The young dwarf cried into his mother’s chest and whispered “Mum please I don’t want to leave you all alone please don’t make me choose.” Dis stroked his back gently in order to comfort him as tears spilled over her eyes making the younger boy stop and look at her.

She missed the touch and comfort of her husband all the whispered ‘I love you'(s) and the nights spent by each other’s side underneath the clear night counting the stars their fingers entwined. She closed her eyes wishing for the perhaps the hundredth time since her loss that time would go back and bring back the one she loved.

She was brought back to reality when she felt a familiar pair of small cool hands against her cheeks. Kili wrinkled his nose in concentration trying to wipe away her tears. A small smile passed over her lips as she cuddled her youngest son protectively and kissed the top of his head.

No words were exchanged in those few minutes as she pulled out a talisman from her pocket and held it out to Kili “What is that” he asked curiously looking at it with great interest.

She sighed in response and answered “Your father gave this to me as a promise he would come back.”

She smiled sadly and placed it in Kili’s small hands “Look after your brother and uncle for me” she whispered pressing her forehead against his gently “but promise me you will come back to me.”

The young dwarf’s eyes shone with tears as he held it close to his heart “I promise. I promise I will come back to you.”
