Fighting off the last group of vampires wasn't exactly easy. Mary's vision had continuously gotten spotty and she had to have Damon save her more than once. It hadn't taken too long, regardless, and by the end Damon was biting his wrist and shoving it to the girls lips for her head to heal.
"So, what you said to get me to do this, about my wife," Alaric began as Damon dropped his wrist back to his side. "It was a lie, wasn't it?"
Damon gave the Saltzman's a cocky grin that made Mary want to take the stake in her hand and shove it through his heart. "Yup."
She was about to speak up when a beautiful woman walked to them, a girl following behind. "Stop. What's going on here? What did you do?" she questioned as she looked around at the carnage.
Damon scoffed. "Me? Your merry little band of vampires spent the day torturing my brother."
The woman's face grew stern as she cocked a brow. "Trust me. The parties responsible for this will be dealt with."
"Our little arrangement doesn't work unless you learn to control them."
"This wasn't supposed to happen." The woman shook her head as she spoke and Mary could see the regret in her eyes, or at least that's what it seemed like.
"Well, it did," Damon stated as he crossed his arms. "If I had a good side... not a way to get on it." At that, the trio made their way out of the house.
They silently walked back to the car, barely noticing the crazed looks on Elena and Stefan's faces. When they had finally reached it, Damon sped to the passenger seat and gave Mary a smug smile as he did so. The blonde rolled her eyes before opening the back seat. Elena had already sat on the drivers side and Stefan refused to get in until Mary did.
"You're smaller than me," he stated as he stood his ground.
"But Elena's your girlfriend," Mary responded as she glanced inside at the amused looks the pair was getting.
Stefan rolled his eyes. "Yeah, and she's your step-sister. Not to mention, I'm five-eleven and you're five-five," he said, a smile fighting its way onto his face. "Get in already."
Mary rolled her eyes as heavy as she could before sliding in. Elena had an amused smile gracing her lips, as did Damon and her father. "Shut up," the blonde mumbled as she crossed her arms. They all let out small laughs before the car fell quiet. Mary felt an unfamiliar feeling bubble up in her chest, or at least one she hadn't felt in a long time.
She felt happy.
Alaric left Elena and the youngest of the Salvatores at the Boarding House. He had tried to kick Damon out, but he insisted that they brought him to the Mystic Grill. Mary told her dad to just agree, seeing as she really didn't want to deal with their bickering.
Alaric and Mary had quickly sat at the bar, the former ordering a glass of burbon. Damon sat next to Mary a moment after, the usual smirk on his face. "That was fun," he commented. Both Saltzmans turned to send him a glare. "Oh, don't look at me like that. I know you hate me. Guess what? Everyone hates me. But you can't deny it. We were badass." Mary smiled a bit at that, her smile only growing wider as he father reached across her to punch the vampire. "Happens."
~
It seemed like Mary spent the majority of her time sitting in her fathers classroom or sitting with her father at the bar. Either way, she spent way too much time with him.
She was sitting in her chair, Elena standing in front of her. Alaric was holding a copy of the report Jeremy had written for him, something Mary hadn't yet read. "I made a copy of a paper Jeremy wrote for me," Alaric began as he held it up to show the eldest Gilbert. "I think you should take a look at it."
Elena grabbed the report, reading the front of it. "Jeremy wrote this?" she questioned, looking between the Saltzmans. Mary nodded in response.
"He's very clear that he didn't think it was real," Alaric stated.
"I really hope you're right because I've done so much to protect him from all this," Elena muttered as she handed the report back to Alaric.
"Maybe you shouldn't protect him from it anymore," Mary said. Elena turned, her usually soft eyes hardening. "How do you do it?"
"What do you mean?"
"With all the lies and secrets," the blonde elaborated. "You have to lie to everyone who's important to you."
Elena sighed, her shoulders dropping. The hard look in her eyes softened, too, though they were sorrowful. "It's not safe for them to know the truth. So, yes, I keep it from them, but it's only because I love them."
There was a long and uncomfortable silence. Elena kept her eyes on Mary, so the shorter of the two let her gaze drift through the room. She could feel how upset Elena was at her for her comment, though she would rather speak her mind than not.
"I think Stefan is a good guy," Alaric then broke the silence. Both girls turned to look at him. "But, at the end of the day he's still a vampire."
"I know it's hard to understand but Stefan is different. He would never do anything to hurt me."
Mary scoffed at that. Elena and Alaric turned to look at her, different expressions on each. Alaric's told her to shut up, not to make another noise, and Elena's was rage filled. Mary held her hands up in surrender to her and Elena stomped out of the room.
"It wouldn't kill you to keep your thoughts to yourself," Alaric stated. Mary laughed. "I'm serious."
"Yeah, well, it seems pointless. I don't owe these people anything," she responded as she stood. "If anything, they owe us. I'm not forgetting we helped rescue a vampire."
Alaric sighed and ran a hand through his hair. He knew it was pointless to argue with her, she always managed to win. Though, Alaric knew a good way to punish her and he all but felt a light bulb go off over his head. He smirked before standing up. "Well, if you're not going to watch what you say..." he trailed off, wanting the suspense to build up. "You have to go with me to he Founders Day party later."
Mary's jaw dropped and she groaned. "Can't I just shave my head instead?" she asked as she stared up at her dad. He shook his head excitedly. "I hate you."
"I love you, too."
