"Hey... I know we haven't been able to talk in the last week... ahem... I hope you're doing well. Listen... I know the last time we saw each other wasn't that nice but... today's Zahara's birthday and it would mean the world to her... and to us if you could be here to celebrate with us... I tried to call you earlier today and... and I also called yesterday but hum... you don't seem to be... you're probably busy. It would just mean a lot if you could come. Alright. Hum... bye, I... uh... okay love you bye."
Stefani's phone starting ringing again. She sighed and grabbed it to shut it down. She put it back on the nightstand and laid back down on her bed. She closed her eyes and sighed once more.
"Who's that ? Your phone doesn't stop ringing since yesterday. Are you sure everything's alright ? Maybe you... maybe you should respond, don't you think ? Maybe it's urgent. Or... I don't know... call back. Just to check."
Stefani smiled to the sweet and worried words she was hearing.
"I'll call.
- Are you really gonna do it though ?
- Yesss. I promise. I promise you I will. Alright go on. You're gonna be late.
- Are you kicking me out ?"
Stefani's smile increased and the expression of her face changed to a playful and sexy one.
"I might be...
- Mmmh...?"
Stefani got up on her feet and walked towards him to kiss him one last time before he'd leave.
"Alright go on now.
- You'll call.
- I will.
- Alright love you.
- Mmmh... Love you too."
Stefani closed the door as he left and sighed again. She came back to her bed and laid down on it again. Her heart was beating fast. She wanted to know why Angelina was trying to reach out for her as much. What if something had happened ? However she hadn't answered because she wasn't alone, and as nobody knew, she wanted to keep their relationship a secret.
She slowly took her phone, and unlocked it. She stared at the numerous notifications indicating all the times Angie had tried to call her, before clicking on the one vocal message she had left on her voicemail. She calmly listened to it and even after she was done she still had the same neutral expression on her face. She was lost.
She let her phone fall down on the pillow next to her, and closed her eyes. She felt her heart beat hard in her chest and her breathing shortening. She didn't know if going back there without a proper conversation beforehand was the right thing to do but she really did love the kids and wouldn't have missed one birthday for nothing on Earth. And God did she miss Angelina. She knew she loved her more than anyone ever, and that nothing it no one could change that, and she did miss her.
She sat on her bed, her hair falling over her face, half naked, her eyes red from not sleeping enough. She was a mess. This week had been exhausting even though she had tried to hide it, she was constantly thinking about that fight on New Year's Eve. She took a deep breath and her shoulders circled back so she could redress her back, and sit properly. She took a quick look at the wrapped up present she bought for Zahara in advance, leaning against the wall, and sighed. She closed her eyes, sighed once again and got off her bed to shower. She was going to that birthday party. She was nervously checking on her phone, waiting for an answer, and every time she tried to look away through the window, her eyes would be drawn back to the device she held tight in her hand. She was biting the right side of her lower lip, almost hurting herself without even feeling it.
"Mom ?"
The small voice behind her woke her up and she got rid of the phone, putting in on the counter, screen down.
"Yes honey ?
- Is Stefani coming today ?"
The mention of her lover made Angelina shudder. Especially coming from the mouth of her own daughter.
"I don't think... I... I don't know, honey. She... I don't know.
- But it's my birthday today. She said she wouldn't have missed it for anything on Earth.
- I know sweetheart, I know. Maybe she'll come. To surprise you."
Angelina gave a warm smile to Zahara to hide her own disappointment of not seeing Stefani coming through the portal. Or not seeing her yet.Stefani stopped the car a few feet away from the security portal. She was already sweating, biting her lip nervously. She still doubted her decision was the right one to take but she couldn't help but go back to Angelina's arms.
She took a look at herself in the rear view mirror, out a strand of hair back behind her ear, put a bit more lipstick where she bit her lip and some small holes on the first layer she'd applied earlier. She nervously replaced the rear view mirror with her shaky hand to end up putting it in the exact same position. She put her hands on her thighs, palms up, sweating. She was so stressed out for what seemed to be not that much of a big deal that she was tempted to ignore the calls and messages and just drive back home.
She inhaled deeply, exhaled slowly, feeling every single brush of the air in her her throat, and put the contact back in the car.
Her heart was beating fast as she was coming through the portal.Angelina was walking away from the window, sure that Stefani wouldn't come anymore, and she felt just as if someone was squeezing her heart so hard it could burst. A week felt like an eternity without her lover by her side. She almost felt like she couldn't bear it, and without the kids, she didn't what she would've done. Her eyes were watery and she quickly dried them out with the tip of her fingers so that the children wouldn't see her crying and wouldn't worry about her.
Head low, she was walking to the kitchen when she heard the sound of the tires screeching on the gravel right outside the house. A sound she'd been waiting for for way to long. She turned around to face the window back again, and her heart started beating faster than ever. The car had passed already and she hadn't seen it but she heard it, such a familiar sound, and she knew it was Stefani.
She almost ran to the door and stopped herself from slamming the door open before Stefani even had the chance to knock. As soon as she heard the ringing of the doorbell, she quite violently opened the door. The door opened. The two women stared at each other without a word, the exact same way they had on the first day they'd met at Stefani's house.
