Chapter 2:
My dad rested his hand on my shoulder as we walked out of the main entrance of the school. Ryan and Spencer sat on the concrete stairs out front. I clear my throat hoping to get their attention. Ryan stands up and looks at me. Near his feet were a black backpack and a skateboard. I look up to my dad and lick my dry lips. “Can I hang out with him for a little bit?” I ask and then look toward Ryan.
My dad looks at him then me. “Be safe and don’t do anything stupid. You have a phone so you can all me if there is a problem. I’m going to explore the Vegas Strip,” he said. He looks like there was more to what he had said but he just walks away.
I step closer to Ryan feeling uneasy. He places his hand on my arm and stares into my eyes. “You look like you are about to throw up. Are you okay?” he rubs his hand up and down and I nod.
“Ryan what I need to tell you is going to sound crazy and you just need to believe it. I don’t really have proof but everything I will say is the truth. I can’t go too deep into it though,” I say softly and he nods then glances at Spencer.
“Spence, is your mom picking you up?” Ryan asks and bends over to pick up his things.
“Do you want a ride?” Spencer responds standing up.
“Would she mind? I can walk, we can walk” Ryan looks at me and smiles.
“Don’t do that. You are going to make this incredibly hard Ryan,” I groan. I loved his smile too much. He would have the same smile in the future.
“Is she okay?” Spencer mumbles.
“Yeah she is never better. So…about that ride?” Ryan was being nice. I could see he was going to forget about that outburst I just had. I wanted to so badly to say thank you but held it in.
“Yeah, come on” Spencer says after a while and starts to walk away. Ryan grabs my hand and pulls me toward were Spencer was heading. Spencer got into the passenger seat of a white SUV and then Ryan pulled me into the back seat.
“Hey. Spencer said that it would be alright to catch a ride,” Ryan says and a pretty woman turns and smiles.
“You live next door sweetie,” she smiles looking at Ryan. She then puts her gaze on me. “Oh, hello there.”
“Hi, I’m Katelyn. Uh well I’m new to town,” I tell her.
“But I know her so she isn’t just some stranger,” Ryan adds and I shoot him a look. He looks at me and shrugs. “Just an old friend,” he adds shortly after then sits back putting on his seatbelt. Spencer’s mom nods then turns around. I put on my seatbelt and sit silently the whole ride.
“Thank you for the ride. I’ll probably be over later tonight,” Ryan smiled as he steps out of the SUV.
“See you later Ryan and it was very nice meeting you, Katelyn,” Spencer’s mom grins.
“Same to you Mrs. Smith. Thank you for the ride,” I say trying to sound happy. Ryan gave a little wave then grabs my hand and brings me to his front door. He lets us in and then shuts and locks the door behind us.
