My heels clicked against to expensive marble floor. I've walked on this floor too many times to keep count.
Everyone who was anyone has been in the Vanderbilt mansion. It's like a goal on your bucket list that is never thought twice of.
Tonight was one of those events were I couldn't miss it. It was Aiden Vanderbilt's 18th birthday.
He was the youngest out of the five brothers. Back when Aiden was in 5th grade and I was in 8th, he would get bullied for his headgear he had to wear for the first half of that year. I was in the parking lot waiting for my ride after volleyball practice, when I saw Aiden surrounded by some big kids. If I didn't save Aiden in time, he would have broken most of the bones in his face, maybe worse.
I smiled at the memory.
My hand ran along the smooth, cool railing as I walked down the stairs.
I saw some heads turn my way and others openly stared.
I haven't been around much.
I was running around the outskirts of Brooklyn with my last boyfriend, Dean for two whole months. I disappeared off the edge of the earth and it wasn't my first time doing this. It's a normal occurrence with me.
I was downstairs and in the huge kitchen, scouting for a drink to wash away my worries of the night.
The room was crowded with men in tailored suits and ladies bathed in perfume. I spotted a fancy looking beer and went to grab it.
I seemed not to be the only one with the idea.
A large, tanned hand knocked with mine. I ran my eyes up the length of his muscled arms and broad shoulders and connected with a pair of light blue eyes. His dimpled cheeks and white smile rushed memories back. His brown hair was tossed to the side in the sexiest way. His black and white suit made him even more desirable.
He was a heartbreaker in a suit.
I saw him smirk at me with confidence and let his arm drop to his side.
Reid Vanderbilt was the only brother in the family the same age as me. I went to school with him and not once did my crush on him falter. I learned how to hide my feelings, for it was my weakness. I covered my feelings with boyfriends and partying. Reid's panty-dropping smile and knee buckling smell had me wanting him more and more, which was not good.
"Well, well, well, if it isn't Miss Parks herself" said Reid, leaning against the counter, "You seemed to have vanished in thin air, again. Where to this time, Kennedy?"
I stiffened when he said my name.
"I was in Brooklyn with my boyfriend" I said, crossing my arms.
"Boyfriend? Is the lover here tonight with you?"
I snorted and shook my head.
"Ex-boyfriend, actually. It wasn't working out between us anymore" I said, only telling half the truth.
Really, Dean started the cheat on me with some models. I wanted to give him a surprise visit at his gallery, but I was greeted by my boyfriend getting hot and heavy with the Swedish half brain.
Reid sighed and I saw something flash in his eyes. Sympathy? Remorse? Relief? Well what ever it was, it was gone before I could identify it.
"Are you seeing anyone, Reid" I asked, not sure of his answer.
Reid made a noise between a laugh and a snort.
"Me? Dating? That's hilarious" he said shaking his head.
I looked at the ground in disappointment.
What was I hoping for? Reid to outright say that he has always has feelings for me like I do and he wants me to be his? That's probably more funny.
Reid is a no strings attached guy. He sleeps with a girl for a night, makes her leave in the morning and just keeps repeating it. I think the only "girlfriend" he has ever had was Paige Greengage from freshman year, but even then he didn't take her out on dates or anything romantic. They just sleep together for 4 weeks.
All the Vanderbilt brothers are drop dead gorgeous. There happens to be five of them too. The oldest, Zach, is a famous 26 year old actor that is in all the comedies. The second oldest, Maverick, is one of the best chefs in the East Coast and just turned 25 last month. The middle child, Brad, is a 23 year old with popular clubs scattered around New York and Los Angeles. Reid is next in line at 21 and he is the womanizer of the Vanderbilt brothers. Lastly, Aiden is graduating high school in June.
It's only early November in the Upper East Side of Manhattan. It's getting colder by the passing days and fall is already showing.
I had to convince myself to go to this party. The dress I was wearing was worth it though. It was a maroon colored dress with lace on the shoulders and long sleeves. The dress dropped to the floor and had a slit on the side that reached mid thigh.
I saw some men looking hungry, and not for the food I was holding earlier. Not that I wasn't used to it. I usually attached that kind of attention. I usually just ignored it because it wasn't from the one guy I wanted it to be.
