Rafe was wondering what exactly just happened.
One minute he was sitting with Kate at dinner while Emma and Michael were fighting over what movie to watch after they finished eating, and the next Kate was gone. He could swear on his life that he had never seen her move so quickly. Emma and Michael had even stopped their fight due to their confusion at seeing their sister jump from her seat and run to the living room, letter in hand.
"What's going on with Kate?" Michael asked as his brain tried to process what he just saw. The Wibberlys all knew that Kate could be fast if she wanted to be, but to run out of the room now was startling.
"She probably got tired of hearing about your dumb book," Emma replied in a joking manner, trying to hide her own shock. She was concerned too, although she didn't want to admit it. Kate looked really upset after reading the letter she brought with her to dinner.
"I'll go see what's going on. Stay here."
Rafe got out of his seat and went to find out why she seemed so upset. After everything they had both gone through with the books and his time as the Dire Magnus, he wanted to be there for her whenever she needed him. He loved her too much to leave her hurt and alone.
"Kate? Is everything okay?" Rafe asked through the door of the living room. At first he heard nothing from her, but eventually the door slowly creaked open.
"..." Kate stood in front of Rafe with tears in her eyes, not able to get herself to speak. Rafe immediately went to hug her close to him as she started to cry, breaking his heart. He never wanted her to be sad again, he just wanted her to be happy and safe. She deserved everything good in this world.
Eventually they moved into the living room and shut the door so they could talk in private. They sat on the floor by the fireplace as Kate tried to get herself to speak.
"Rafe.. I-I'm..." Before she could truly begin to explain she felt like her throat was closing up, her eyes felt as though they were burning.
She couldn't do it.
Rafe saw the letter crumbled up in her hand and gently took it from her. Some teardrops smudged the ink to the point of being illegible, but he could make most of it out. As he read it, he felt as though he had been punched.
"Dear Ms. Kate Wibberly,
I regret to inform you that...
...be moved next week...
Please know that this decision was made in what we believe are the best interests of you and your siblings. While the dangers you all faced have been defeated, there are many who would see to it that you and your family...
We will expect you here soon and look forward to meeting... hope you will enjoy your time here.
Sincerely,
..."Kate began to cry again as he read the letter, hating what was happing to her family. It wasn't right.
"They want you to leave?" Rafe asked in disbelief.
"...They said that keeping Emma, Michael, and I together in the non-magical world would be too dangerous. They want to separate all of us until they are sure we will be safe. Mother and Father already have been sent to safe locations. It's supposed to be temporary, but I don't know how long."
Rafe couldn't believe they would do this. The Wibberly siblings spent years apart from their parents, and now they want to take them away from each other as well... he couldn't let this happen. There has to be some way to convince them to let them stay together.
"What if you stayed in New York? Abigail could keep all of you safe and together," Rafe suggested. He was desperate. If the siblings were hidden away, where would Kate go?
"We can try to ask!" Kate said with new found hope. If they couldn't stay together in the non-magical world, maybe they could in the magical one.
Rafe stood up, pulling Kate up with him from the floor. Seeing her smile always made him feel like the luckiest person in the world. Looking into her beautiful eyes, he held his hand out to her.
"Dance with me?"
Kate smiled and took his hand, finally feeling hope for the first time that night.
