nini's pov

I woke up, feeling pretty confident and ready to start the day. It was my first day of junior year. I was ready to just  put everything with Ricky past me and make some new memories. So, I got ready and went downstairs to make some breakfast.

"Are you making breakfast?" Mama C asked me, as she came down the stairs.

"Yes. Yes, I am."

"Well, good for you...What's got you in such a good mood?" She replied, smiling.

"Life." I answered, plain and simple.

"Okay, then...Well, I hate to ruin your good mood, but I'm not gonna be able to drive you to school. And Mama D is already on her way to work. Could you get a ride with EJ, maybe?"

"Nope. He had to get there a little earlier to give the freshman a tour of the school. I would've had to text him like 20 minutes ago." I told her, scrambling the eggs in the pan

"What about Ricky or Big Red? I know. I know. Things aren't great between you and Ricky right now, but they do live really close." She tried to convince me, failing miserably.

"Sorry, but no. I am not hitching a ride with Richard. And Big Red still doesn't have his license so he always skateboards with Richard to school, even though Richard has his license."

"He's just being a good friend." She said, shrugging.

"Mama! Don't defend him!"  I yelled, raising my eyebrows.

"I'm not. I'm just...Nevermind. You'll just have to take the bus, then." She responded, getting out plates.

"I guess so..."

Once it was ready, I ate my breakfast and left. I walked to the bus stop and saw some other kids waiting. Amongst them, there was a boy who looked kind of familiar and I almost thought it was Ricky, but he turned around and I realized I was wrong.

"Relax...You're Nini 2.0, remember?" I said to myself as quietly as I could, as the bus pulled in and we all got on.

After first block, I met EJ by the lockers, kissing him on the cheek. "How was the tour?" I asked, smiling.

"Great. Their faces were priceless, when they saw how big the school is."  He answered, chuckling.

"Oh, come on. Don't you remember what it was like being a freshman? Cut them some slack."  I replied, playfully smacking his shoulder. Not gonna lie, it kind of hurt my hand.

"I'm just joking, babe...So, I was wondering if maybe you wanted to catch a movie later, after school."  He said, closing his locker.

"Yeah. Sounds great." I responded.

"Awesome. See you at lunch?"

"You bet." I said, pulling him close. He gave me a peck on the lips and then went to class. I just stood there with a smile, until I saw Ricky walking with Big Red. I frowned, thinking about all the pain Ricky caused me. "So much for putting it all behind me."

"What's wrong?" Kourtney asked, showing up from behind me.

"Nothing. I'm alright. Just a little hard seeing Ricky. And, of course, he's in my homeroom too. I thought of maybe changing homerooms, but I wanted to show him I'm strong, just like you said."  I answered, shrugging.

"Hey. This whole Nini 2.0 business isn't gonna just happen right away. I get that you just need some time before this wound can heal. You two have known each other for awhile, practically your whole lives." She explained, putting a smile back on my face.

"Yeah. Thanks, Kourt...I should probably head to class now."

"I'm sorry, babe, but that movie was terrible...At least, we got to spend time together, though." EJ said, as we left the movie theater at the mall.

"What? I liked it...Anyways, wanna head to the food court? I'm starving."

"Yeah, sure." He replied, as we walked.

EJ went to order our food, and I decided to wait at the wishing fountain, taking a penny out of my purse. I thought about throwing it in, but I couldn't stop thinking about my third date with Ricky. We went to that exact mall and saw a movie at that exact theater. Then, we went to the food court (where EJ was ordering me something currently), not before stopping at the wishing fountain where I stood at this exact moment.

We stood together, hand-in-hand, throwing our pennies in.

I remembered wishing for Ricky and I to be happy together for the rest of our lives. Who knew that would only last a little less than a year?

Before going over to EJ, I thought back to Ricky's wish. Obviously, even Ricky wasn't dumb enough to say it out loud, but I'd always wondered what he'd wished for. For a moment, I thought about asking him, considering mine didn't come true, so his must not have either, but I decided against it.

I  really didn't want to talk to him. No matter how great our relationship had been at the start, it was over. I needed to just accept that it was over, instead of thinking back to the good memories. Especially, considering I was on a date with EJ.

"Babe, food's ready!" EJ called out to me, taking me out of my thoughts.

"Wow. That was fast." I replied, walking over and sitting down beside him.

That night, I had trouble falling asleep. When I finally did, I had a really weird dream.

It was sometime after high school graduation, I think. All I know is I ran into Ricky, after years of not seeing each other. "Hey, it's been awhile. Hasn't it? How...How are you?"  I asked, with a small smile.

"I'm great. I just got back from a trip to London for a skate competition."  He told me, with a giant smile.

"Oh, you still skate?" I responded, as he messed with his curls that were still as curly as ever.

"Yep. I mean, I've always loved skating and now I get to travel the world too because of it. Plus, I met this really cool chick online last year who said she was a fan of mine. Get this, after we talked a bit online, she buys tickets for my competition and we meet up for coffee after it's over. Now, we've been together for almost a year and I am definitely in love with this woman...So, what about you? Still with EJ?"  He said, while I just stood there, just barely listening.

"Uh...No. We kind of broke up right before he left for college. It's cool, though. I've just been focusing on school and spending time with friends and family. It's good to have a break from romance, ya know." I replied, shrugging.

"I don't, but you seem happy. So, that's great...I should probably go. Nice seeing ya."  He said, walking off.

"Yeah. You...too."  I said, hesitantly, as everything faded into black.

Suddenly, I jolted awake and, weirdly, there were tears in my eyes.
