I guess it started when I was four years old. Crazy, huh? Such a young age to think of something like this, and such an in-depth topic to debate about. But that's how it was, and that's how it will stay.
I grew up in an extremely religious home, my parents being major Christians. I had three siblings, a brother named Justin, a sister named Tiffany, and a younger sister named Amanda.
As most kids in strongly biased religious or political households are expected to do, we all were raised to be Christian as our parents. This also meant that we had to follow strict rules that my parents thought were the only path to enlightenment.
Sure, I had never thought of how many parents would react to how I felt. I thought that being Christians, they would also know that Christians were about love and acceptance. But, because I never knew any sense at the time, I decided to keep it to myself.
Maybe, if we go through my life in my own perspective, we'll understand how I really felt. How to look through my eyes and realize that this was not the way to live.
My name is Leelah Alcorn. This is my story.
