Joshua was my spirit animal•
"Now remember; you're a girl" he said pacing around the room, we were sparring as per usual while talking about the race. "And I'm a huge feminist, but girls don't race in these races" he shrugs as I kept punching.
"Oh Joshua" I smiled and he chuckled, "let me guess, only guys can race in your races" I mockingly say impersonating Joshua, "I'll just tell them my name's Bailey or some shit" I shrugged and he laughed. His pearly white teeth and his dimples popping, his beautiful deep blue eyes like mine, his dark chocolate hair sticking to his face. "Tell your sexist friend or whoever he is to come suck on my non-existent dick!" I exclaimed and he chuckled slightly, "He's not sexist" he smiles. pulling the boxing gloves off my hands I flipped him the bird.
"He's so sexist" I sighed heavily.
The guy once asked me why I'm not home making dinner. What the fuck? Besides Bailey's sort of a unisex name so if I turn out to be a woman under that helmet they can't complain.
"If we're going to do this I need you to promise me no one will find out that I helped my little sister play car" he cringed and I roll my eyes, "play car?" I scoff, he nods his head and I walk over to the can of soda I placed on the table. Mhmm, mountain dew. I watch as Joshua pulls his grey shirt over his head, it's so weird that we're twins and he gets most of the attention. I mean hello! We're twins!
"And remember the other reason no one can find out"
I pull my dark brown, curly hair up into a messy bun and stroll towards the door. "Joshy" I call and he hums, "if I win then you're doing my chores for the next month" I smirk smugly knowing I'd win for sure because the best racer taught me how to win. "Oh you're on" he grins, "but if you lose, then 'Bailey' will have to take me to school for the next two months" he smirks and I groan.
"Oh come on!" I groan loudly swinging the door open. I jog up the stairs to the hallway and throw the empty can in the trash can. "Whoa!" Joshua exclaims and I chuckled. To everyone else I was the biggest girly girl but to those in my family I was Mrs Tom boy. The captain of the Lacrosse team.
"Eyes on the track. Feet on the gas. Hand on the steering wheel and another on the gear stick" his mantra rings in my ear.
•••
"Why do you subject yourself to the abuse of those girls is beyond me" My friend laughs and I shrugged, "I figured if I shrunk at her feet it'd make her feel better about herself, seeing that she's the spawn of Satan and all" Kelie's laughter echoes and I smiled at her. After Christian dropped me off, Kelie and I made our way to the track where we sat and talked.
"You're something else Hailey Whynters" Kelie sighs looking at all the cars parked up nearby, "yes, indeed" I agreed grabbing a handful of chips. We sat on the stands with chips and bottles of coke, my hair slightly damp. I was wearing, jeans pants and a red crop top with the number two plastered on it in bold, all the workers were down below getting the place ready for the big race tonight.
My hoodie had been replaced by a leather jacket giving off the whole badass persona. Exactly what I was going for. A thin sheet of eyeliner and some lip gloss was all I needed. I checked the time, "Why did you drag me here so early anyway?" I asked her and she glanced over at me, a sad look washing over her face, "I saw how you looked at him" she sighs and my brows furrowed in utter confusion. If she was talking about Christian and the fight that night, there's nothing to worry about. He was not going to be a problem. "I was surprised" I blurt out, "the guy never once spoke to me and I admit it made seeming depressed to the eyes of others easier, but once he did I felt relieved that I had someone to say a few words to" I shrugged, "it's not everyday your parents go rogue leaving you to tell the tales of how they're supposedly dead" I whisper.
I turn away.
I remember the night before when we were all together and happy, Joshua had gotten an A in Chemistry class and we were all so happy because he was failing miserably. My father sat with a grin on his face, my mother stood at the stove cooking dinner, we were happy until they were called away.
Then came the night when I had chased Joshua to his car, we were arguing about mom and dad but at first he'd already seemed angry about something, his eyes were bloodshot, he reeked of alcohol but I was too focused on getting him to accept that they weren't coming back to make sure he hadn't gotten in that car. I'd got in the back seat of his car, hoping he wouldn't leave, I kept asking him to slow down, to stop and listen before we ended up dead like our parents possibly were. But he didn't and soon the icy road causes the tires to skid and he lost control of the car. It sends us over a bridge, the ice cold water hitting my skin was what kept me from dying immediately, it'd awaken me.
But Joshua who wasn't wearing his seatbelt went flying through the windshield.
"I'm not expecting you to understand but, after Joshua died I felt like I had nothing left in this world, before that it was easier to pretend I was depressed but then it became real. I felt like a lost soul wandering Earth with no purpose" I explained and her eyes clouded with tears, her hands forming fists. "Before the accident I was sure my parents were coming back but then Joshua.." I trailed off and she placed an hand on my shoulder "I get it, you don't think they're ever coming back" she croaks out and I nodded wiping away a fallen tear.
I feel as if it is my fault that Joshua's dead, if I hadn't been arguing with him then he probably wouldn't have felt the need to go in that car. As for my parents, They probably blame me too. "I'm suspicious of his sudden interest in me too" I tell her grabbing a chip from the bag, "I mean look at me, I'm a mess!" I chortled and Kelie snorted, "we're all messes" she giggled and I nodded in agreement.
"-But That doesn't mean I'm going to tell him anything more" I reassured her and she sighed in relief.
Pretending to be someone you're not is really hard, but for the sake of my parents who might still be alive I must.
Kelie is much more than just a friend, she's my trainer. Joshua might've trained me for the ring, but Kelie and her parents trained me for the worst. They aren't really Russians, as far as I know they're posing as Russians from some dangerous gang to infiltrate this gang that has been moving drugs through cars and such. Our families were very close which meant we were close.
My parents suggested I had learned self defense because for one, I was a girl and two my father was special operations force and my mother had some big job she never talked about. And Kelie who's actually older than me, and some sort of spy who my mother knows very well, offered to train me.
Yes, I know my life is crazy.
What's crazier is that I'm helping Kelie and her brother. Because they can't get close to any of the cars, they need me to place a tracking device somewhere inside that'll lead them to where the deal was going down. Wow, that escalated quickly, I went from sad girl to badass in seconds, I thought to myself as I watched the cars driving in.
"They're here" I tell Kelie, her eyes following the cars as they drove in. Those were the real deals.
