"Kriya, tum yahan wait karo. Main car parking se leke aaya." Rey turned to leave but Kriya held his arm. He looked at her expectantly, waiting for her to speak up but Kriya seemed hesitant to speak up.

"Kriya, kuch bolo to sahi"

'Woh Rey, main tumhare saath ghar nahi ja rahi hoon."

Rey raised his eyebrows in confusion. "Then, where will you go?"

"Main Punit ke saath time spend karne wali hoon aaj. Bahot dino se humne ek dusre ko dekha nahi, na? That's why. Look, Punit's here."

Punit met the two of them at the front of the hospital building.

"Par Kriya, abhi toh doctor ne kaha tha ki--"

Kriya cut him off. "Exactly Rey, abh toh meri paas free time bhi hai dene ko" Kriya's indifferent attitude made the message bright and clear; this wasn't up for debate.

"Fine." Rey was not one to back down easily. "I'll come with you two."

'Nahi Rey, you look tired. Go home and rest.' The tension between the two was palpable as they maintained strict eye contact. Kriya's gaze was cold and challenging whereas Rey's eyes showed shock and indignation. Then, Kriya interlooped an arm with Punit's. 'Chale, Punit?'

Punit watched for Rey's reaction before replying to Kriya. When no outburst or clear signs of anger were made, Punit said 'yes, let's go'. The two bid adieu to Rey, leaving the young man alone at the hospital gates.

...

Since the hospital visit, Kriya and Punit failed to make contact with Rey despite his numerous text messages inquiring about their whereabouts. Any calls Rey made were left unanswered. It was hours before Rey heard back from the two and his anxiety was off the charts. At 11:48pm, Rey's ringtone blasted through their apartment; an incoming call from Punit.

"Hello Punit. Tum dono kahan ho? I've been trying to reach you for hours!"

"Rey, woh..." Punit's voice was barely audible due to the deafening music in the background and loud screams.

"Punit, speak up! I can't hear you"

"Rey, give me a second."

On his side of the phone line, Rey could hear Punit's muffled voice saying 'excuse me' and 'pardon me' as he made his way out of whatever bloody crowd he was in.

Once outside the building, Punit spoke, "Rey, woh... hum..." Rey could not stand the pauses Punit took as he grew agitated.

"Punit! Man, just talk to me. Where are you?"

"We're at a downtown club"

"A club?" Rey repeated, taking in the meaning of the words before he let his anger loose. "You brought her to a club? How could you? I mean, what were you thinking?"

"I... I didn't plan to, okay. I just, I couldn't say not her. After the appointment, I took her to my house and put on a movie. I could tell something was off, okay. She didn't talk or laugh throughout the movie. She was still. Frozen and numb. Then, out of nowhere, she just started bawling her eyes out."

"Oh God", Rey's heart just fell.

"She started talking about the doctors and how they gave up on her and how she was just tired of everything. She cried, I need a break and I want to go somewhere. She didn't tell me where, she just took my keys and drove. During the entire ride, the music from the radio was blaring. I kept on trying to figure out what was in her head or where we were going but she wouldn't dare take her eyes of the road. Her hands clenched the steering wheel so hard, you could see her veins tighten. Before I knew it, she stopped us in front of the club and said lets go. She slammed the car door shut and was about to rush into the club when I grabbed her hand and tried to stop her. But she wouldn't have any of it. She took her free hand and tried to fight my grip off, repeating 'Punit, mera haath chodo' par maine nahi chodo until she finally looked at me. 'Please' she whispered, her voice was rough and hoarse from crying so much and for so long 'I need to numb the pain, Punit, I need this'. I grew weak and let go of her. She ran inside and drank three shots of tequila. Since then, its been impossible to separate her from the crowd of sweaty bodies on the dance floor."
