a monotone beeping sounded through the dimly lit hospital room like a countdown; a timer, ticking away as gordon's body shut down from the inside out. glossy tears fell onto the white cotton sheets patterned with navy blue snowflakes, absorbing into them and turning a dull grey. benrey's pale and scarred hands wrapped tightly around gordon's, and his long black hair stuck to his sweaty, teary-eyed face. he had grown it out to match his husband's, even going as far to dye it a blinding silver in solidarity. now, it was tied messily in a ponytail, barely keeping it out of his eyes. although gordon had grown old and grey, benrey had barely changed since they first met. he was rarely awake, only long enough to eat and take his medications, and occasionally tell benrey how much he meant to him. his waking hours grew slimmer and slimmer as the days went on. soon, he wouldn't wake up. soon, benrey would have to move on, just like he had to do when dr. coomer and bubby had passed on a few years back. they'd lived a lot longer than the average human life span, but still fell victim to mortality's wrath.there was a soft knock on the door, and benrey's eyes shifted. a golden snout peaked through the crevice as sunksit wriggled his way in, tommy following closely behind.
"hey, benrey. i brought food, if you... uh," tommy began, stopping to notice benrey hadn't moved other than to make brief eye contact. he set down the plastic grocery bag and grabbed a chair.
"i know it's a lot... you... you get used to it, i guess." he lied. tommy'd been around for a long time, but it never hurt any less to see them go. he placed a gentle hand on his back. benrey turned his head stiffly to face him and opened his mouth;
"i tried to tell him... he didn't want to stay... i told him we had the science, but he..."
"it isn't your fault."
"i know."
the room fell silent aside from benrey's shaky breaths. he heard the plastic bag crinkle as tommy pulled a sandwich and two sodas from it. he wasn't hungry. how could he be hungry when he knew he couldn't enjoy the food with the light of his life? for decades, he'd distanced himself from people, knowing he'd have to leave them behind one day. his chest clenched, another wave of grief hitting him as he doubled over. quiet sobbing infiltrated the silence like dull knives jabbing at the air. sunkist put his head between benrey and gordon, licking the tears off his pale face. finally, he sat up, wiping his tired face as he let a faint smile creep into view. the dog pushed his head excitedly against benrey's clammy hands as he sniffled and gathered himself. tommy held out a bologna sandwich for him and he accepted it hesitantly.
