I wake up to an agonizing beeping noise. I can feel the bright lights shining down on me. I squint as I open my eyes slowly. The room is all white. Bare walls. Solid white tiled floor. I see a doctor moving towards me. "She's awake!" A nurse shouts from the other side of the room.
"How are you feeling Ms. Evans?" The doctor asks in a monotone voice. His hair was grey with age and his eyes were were a pale blue to match. His face was slightly wrinkled. He looked old enough to possibly retire, but yet he keeps it up.
"Shitty." I get a sudden shock of pain in my head and I immediately reach a hand up. Instead of feeling my soft hair, I feel a line of stitches on the right side of my head. I wince when I touch it.
"You took quite a spill there, young lady."
"I didn't trip, if that's what you're thinking."
"Well what did happen? I know a boy dropped you off late last night..."
"A boy? What boy? What did he look like? What was his name?!" My heart starts to warm at the thought that it could be Luke.
"I don't know Ms. Evans. I didn't see him. But please answer me. What happened?" My mind is still wandering to what he said about a boy dropping me off. It had to be Luke. He is the only one who seems to care about me.
"I--i can't remember..." I lie. I remember everything up until my blackout. What I want to find out is what happened after. Did he....? Ugh I can't even admit it to myself. But I truly hope someone helped me. Someone saved me. And something tells me the sexy stoner/poet with the dazzling eyes did.
There is just something about his eyes. They make him seem beyond his years. Like somehow he traveled all the way through time and space. Saw everything in the universe there was to see. And it was all bottled up in his Galaxy blue eyes. Eyes deep like the sea. Eyes calm as the tide. Eyes that I want to see again. And every day for as long as I live.
"Miss?" The doctor abruptly shakes me from my thoughts.
"Sorry. So when can I leave this place?"
"As soon as your parents arrive. They are on their way here right now. Try to get some sleep before they get here."
"Okay. Thanks." I try to hide my worry. I really don't want to play 20 questions with my mother. Especially with my head in constant pain.
I try to close my eyes and get some shut-eye before my parents come, but everytime I do, I see Derek's menacing smile. And as soon as I see it, I flash my eyes open immediately. Fuck.
"Goddammit Luna!" I hear my step mother exclaim as she rushes through the door. My father trails her quietly. Shit. "What were you thinking?! Having a party while we were away? Drinking? Getting yourself hurt? Sometimes I swear you don't even think! You don't think about the worry you cause your father and I! You don't think about your future! You could have been arrested for underage drinking! It's a good thing we know the doctor! Otherwise you would have landed yourself in jail! You--"
"Just shut the fuck up! You make everything about YOU! How I worry YOU! I get hurt yet somehow YOU'RE the hurt one! I'm sick of it! And you don't even ask how I fucked my head up! You just assume I pulled some stupid stunt while I was drunk! You know nothing! You know nothing about what happened to me, what I'm going through! YOU DONT EVEN KNOW ME!" Im shouting loudly while ignoring the earsplitting headache that pounds with every syllable I speak. Thank god I have this hospital room to myself instead of sharing it with a sick roommate. I really don't want anyone to witness this argument.
"Darling," my father coos to my step mom, "let's not get worked up about this. Luna has obviously been through a lot today, and with her head injury, it's best not to yell at her. Can you... Give me a minute with Luna? Alone?"
My mom breathes out loudly before reluctantly turning on her heel and stomping out the door. Her expensive heels clicking with every step she takes. My father gently closes the door behind her before walking towards me.
"Look Luna, I don't want to yell at you, but I would like to tell you how irresponsible it was to throw a party without our consent. And look what happened. You were hurt. And the last thing I want is your pain..."
"Isn't that ironic?" I whisper to him.
"What's ironic?" His eyebrows are furrowed and he is frowning slightly. The frown displays all his newly formed wrinkles. He was in his early fifties but age had started to take effect. But his grey eyes remain cloudy with emotion.
"It's ironic that you don't want me to be in pain, yet that's the state I am constantly in. I am always hurting. Maybe not physically, but emotionally." I feel a warm tear slide down my cheek.
"Tell me how I can help you. I love you Luna, and I only want you to be happy again. What can I do to get the real you back?"
"Dad this is the real me now. And as much as I want to change, and as much as I want to heal the pain, I can't. If I was able to, don't you think I would have done it by now? I'm a lost cause. I gave up on helping myself. And you should too." My father takes me in his arms. He is now crying as well. His breaths are uneven and his chest is moving in and out at a fast pace as he tries to take in air.
"Please don't ever say that. Never say you give up. I am so scared to lose you. I'm scared I have already lost you. But I refuse to give up on you. I love you Luna. And I want you to know that you are loved by so many. So just keep fighting. You will find that light at the end of the tunnel." My father unravels himself from me and stands up. Before he exits the room, he lightly kisses the top of my head.
As soon as he shuts the door behind himself, I am left to my own thoughts. And that can be one of the most deadly things.
