~ Erin Gleeson Pov ~
"Father?" I ask, opening the door of his office in the tower.
We moved to loops again recently. I wasn't told why.
"Ah, if it isn't my little star. Come in, come in." He says, looking up at me.
His words tell me he's trying to be affectionate but his voice is always cold. It always has been, though.
I did as I was told, standing at attention by his desk. I'm part of the team now; I have to be somewhat professional. Though, this isn't much of a change, I suppose. There is nothing but rules here.
"What can I do for you, son?"
The way my father speaks often sounds cold, which makes sense given his peculiarity, but he always adds nicknames. It doesn't sound friendly in the slightest, though.
He looks up at me expectantly, or at least I assume he is. It's hard to tell, given the lack of pupils. I'm the only one around here with pupils. They're an unnatural, neon green that allow me to see my apparent past lives.
"Father, if you're allowed, could you tell me why I'm being sent away?"
He shakes his head, going back to his paperwork. There's a chuckle at the doorway.
"My, my, my, Mr Erin Gleeson, always so eager." A chilling voice breathes from the doorway.
I turn and, unsurprisingly, it's father's boss' voice. I used to call him uncle; it's a shame father's job ruined that. He stares right at me, or at least I think he is.
"Mr Barron." I say, straightening my back and staring, respectfully, in his direction. "I apologise for being rude and intrusive but you must understand that I feel I-!"
He laughs. My stomach drops. He's laughing at me. They always do this. I'm always belittled. But it's better than what they've told me about peculiars. Apparently, I'm the only peculiar they can trust.
"No, no. You deserve to be in on it. After all, it-" he starts taking long, threatening strides towards me. "-is imperative to the plan that you don't give us away. You, my boy, have the perfect peculiarity to gain a certain peculiar's trust and then crush it."
"How? All I can do is see my past lives and they're barely ever useful. Ophelia only tells me I'm doing the wrong thing, that you're lying! Oscar tries to give me proof but it's all outdated and...The others don't talk."
"They were raised on the wrong side of this war, child." Barron consoles, pouting slightly. "Soon, they'll see. And as for your peculiarity, soon you'll figure it out. You're a smart boy, Erin."
"O-Okay.." I mutter, feeling small.
"Mr Gleeson, if you'd like to do the honours, as you raised this gem." Barron says with a twisted grin.
"Oh! Right, the best part. You're our informant." My father says, getting up and gripping my shoulders. "You, my son, are going to gather information for two weeks before running away and telling us their weaknesses, alright Erin?"
I nod. Peculiars, from what I've been told, are hideous, inside and out. They deserve this.
"Attaboy, Erin, now, go and rest. You've got a big day ahead of you!"
"Yes, father." I whisper, looking at the floor.
