I walked down the hallways of Earl Park Academy, clutching onto my books and making my way to my locker. 192, 193, 194 there it is, 195. I punched in my locker combination and put away all my books for the year and grabbed my chemistry book.
"Boo!" I heard from behind me while someone grabbed me. I jumped and spin around to see Agnes smiling at me. "God dammit woman, you scared the crap out of me" I cried back while pulling her into a hug.
"Sorry girl!" she chuckled, "welcome back to hell!"
Yes, another year at Earl Park Academy. Agnes was just as excited as me to get out of this town. She had big plans to move to Australia and work at farms while she explored the country. I admire her for that. Having an idea of what she wanted to do. Not locking herself into college while studying something she's not interested in. She says she will go one day, when she knows exactly what she wants to study. It makes me feel proud to be her friend.
"I don't think hell can even be compared to this place" Brooks said while walking up to us and pulling us into a hug. "You have a point there" I laughed.
Brooks and I headed towards our Chemistry class while Agnes headed off to hers.
"Sorry I left in such a hurry this morning, I had something to deal with" Brooks informed me. To be honest, I hadn't noticed he left until my shift was over and I was ready to drive us both to school. I was still so worked up over Elijah coming in and having a completely different personality than the first time I met him.
"It's okay" I smiled back, "anything I need to worry about?" I asked. He usually lets us know exactly what he's doing, but I didn't want to pry. He shook his head so I decided to drop it.
We walked into Chemistry class and took our seats in the back where we usually sit. Miss. Jones, our teacher, walked in and started the class.
I had zoned out when she started but was bought back to reality when I felt Books tap my shoulder. Before I could ask what he wanted, I saw him looking at the front of the class. I looked up and standing there was Elijah, staring right at me.
I quickly tried to look away from him and gazed out the window. "Everyone can I have your attention?" Miss. Jones called out, "we have a new student starting with us today, this is Elijah Brown."
I looked back over and he had stopped looking at me. He did a slight wave with his hand and looked to Miss. Jones as she told him to find a spare seat.
I looked to the right of me and saw that the seat was empty. Elijah was slowly making his way up to us. I looked over to Brooks and widened my eyes. I heard the chair next to me slide back and felt him sit down.
Brooks was looking at me and mouthed the words to say hello to him. I shook my head and pretended I was focusing on what Miss. Jones was saying.
Elijah cleared his throat and I turned to him. His emerald green eyes were staring right into my hazel ones. The light from the sun hit them at just the right angle, making them shine more than usual.
His hair was brown and slicked back, with one single strand hanging down that I wanted to put it back into place.
His coral pink lips curved into a sweet smile, showing off his pearly white teeth.
"Hi Luna" he chimed, "fancy seeing you here."
I felt Brooks tap my shoulder so I moved back a bit, "Hi Elijah, this is my friend Brooks" I said introducing him, "Brooks, this is Elijah. He came into my work the other morning."
Brooks held out his hand and Elijah shook it, "nice to meet you" he smirked.
"Nice to meet you to Elijah, where are you from?" Brooks asked.
Good question I thought to myself.
"New York" Elijah smiled. "Well what brings you to Earl Park? It's a bit of a downgrade from the big apple" Brooks asked. "Change of scenery" Elijah replied.
The two of them kept the conversation going for a little be longer but I zoned out. I wondered what Elijah meant when he said he wanted a change of scenery. Leaving New York to come to a small town in Indiana that not many people have actually heard of is strange. Most people living here want to get out of this town.
The rest of the morning went by quickly and soon enough it was lunch time.
I found my way outside and sat under the usual tree that Anges, Brook and I sit. Agnes was already there playing on her phone and eating an apple. I sat down next to her getting my own lunch out – an orange, peanut butter sandwich and a chocolate chip cookie I took from work earlier that morning.
"Brooks told me a about your boyfriend" she commented, "I think he's jealous."
"Elijah?" I questioned and she nodded her head, "okay I've known the guy for a whole two seconds and you think I'm in love?" I chuckled, "Brooks can have him."
"As a matter of fact, I have a date tonight Luna" Brooks said while sitting down with us. "Oh, do tell" I smirked.
"Well, his name is Theo – we met online as usual. He's got beautiful blonde hair with blue eyes. He goes to college here too, so he's older, and he's one hundred percent out of the closet" he winked, "and I think he might just be the one" Brooks said proudly.
"Okay settle down" Agnes laughed, "you should decide that after the first date."
"Oh no, we have been speaking on the phone nearly every night for the past two weeks, this is it Anges, I'm going to finally be off the market."
I raised my eyebrows at him and we all broke out in laughter.
Brooks has been hardcore into the dating game since he came out three years ago. Unfortunately, that's insisted of many boys who just weren't ready for a relationship to break his heart, but he's never given up. He knows what he wants and he goes for it. I just hope this one is different for him this time.
I felt a shadow appear over me, blocking the late August sun from my skin. Just looking at the shoes in front of me, I knew exactly who it was. Elijah.
"Do you guys mind if I sit with you?" he asked, "I haven't really met anyone else today."
"Of course," Agnes beamed, "I'm Agnes by the way."
He introduced himself to her and sat down right next to me.
"How's your first day going?" I asked, wanting to be polite. "It's fine, a bit different to my old school but I'm settling in" he smiled.
His smile was contagious. I watched as his eyes crinkled at the sides when he told a joke about New York. I laughed at his joke, but realised I had completely ignored it when I was watching him smile.
Tell bell rang signalling the second half of the day and we all stood up. I had Biology with Brooks and Agnes and Elijah had History together so we parted our separate ways.
"Miss Luna's got a crush" Brooks sang, "shh" I hissed, "everyone can hear you right now! And I do not have a crush, I was just trying to be nice."
"If that helps you sleep at night" he winked as he skipped off ahead to Biology.I stopped at my locker and got out my Biology book and sighed. I can't get distracted by a boy this year, not like with Asher. All boys do is disappoint me. I was a wreck after Asher and I ended things. I can't let anything distract me this year if I want to make a life for myself next year.
It was today, I made a vow to myself to not let myself fall for anyone this year. Not until I was out of this town, far far away.
Little did I know, that one guy would change my entire perspective of that.
