Lan Fan POV
I gently pulled at the stem of the rose. I held it up to my face, examining the petals. A small smile spread through my face. I pulled my mask up to my head and I pulled out a notebook. Flicking through the pages, I lay the rose down in an empty space and quickly shut the book. Opening it again, I cut off the stem that stuck out and got up. I climbed the near-by tree and sat down, opening a large book and my smaller flower collection. Tracing my finger down the page, my eyes darted from line to line, looking for the entry on Roses. I shut the book with a frustrated sigh. There was no entry on Roses. As I was about to jump down the tree, Ling appeared.
"Young Lord! What are you doing here?" He shushed me before sitting in the tree, concealed by the leaves. Before long, I heard a shout of
"Young Lord! Lan Fan! Where have you gone?" Grandfather was looking for us. Ling put an arm in front of me to prevent me leaving. I gave him a confused glare as he shushed me again. Grandfather walked away, looking elsewhere for us.
"What was that for, Young Lord?" I tried to get down, but he grabbed my arm.
"I kinda, might've, possibly, maybe, sorta, kinda- wait did I already say kinda?" He started
"Just spit it out." I sighed. This boy.
"I ate all the food." He sweat-dropped. "Also didn't I
tell you to call me Ling?"
"Again? Grandfather is going to be so angry." I ignored the last question, and checked in case he was coming back.
"What's this?" He asked, opening my flower collection.
"Nothing!" I snatched it from him before he could open it.
"Why can't I see it?" He questioned, trying to grab it back from me.
"Because it's mine." I climbed down the tree.
"Awww, you're no fun! Can't I see it?" I jumped on the grass, my mask falling beside me.
"Please Lan Fan?" He followed me as I walked back into the house.
"I promise I'll give it back!" He continued, as I walked into the house.
"Please?? Lan Fan! Are you even listening to me?" I walked out of the house to go buy more food.
"Here!" I shoved it in his hands so I could actually buy food without getting weird looks.
"So wh-" he started.
"No sounds." I shushed him before he could finish. He nodded.
"Grandfather! I got more food!" I called to him.
"Thank you Lan Fan." He acknowledged.
I walked outside and lay on the grass.
"Can I speak yet?" Ling walked and sat next to me on the grass. I nodded and sat up.
"So, you collect.. flowers?" He handed the book to me.
I nodded silently played with the grass around me.
"I didn't think that would be something you'd do." He chuckled and stood up.
"I thought it'd be interesting to see how the flowers here compare to the flowers in Xing," I explained.
"I guess there's a lot I don't know about you, huh?" He held out his hand and I took it.
"I guess so." He pulled me up and let go of my hand. I dusted myself off as he walked towards the house.
"You coming?" He asked.
"I'm going to sit out here for a bit. You go ahead." I walked towards a large tree. "Don't get into too much trouble!"
I sat up in the tree, masked by green leaves. Opening my book, I flicked around to make sure Ling didn't mess it up. As I reached the last page, the entry on rose was completed.
"A rose means love or something like that. -Ling " I let out a quiet laugh. I guess he finished it. I closed the book and looked up at the sky and watched the clouds pass.
