Just Like Chess - A Highschool Love Story

Chapter Four

On the exact day of the meeting between Jack and Mindy, Gary woke up happy. While still laying on his bed with a Batman blanket and Superman sheet, he picked his smartphone, and just looked at the wallpaper that contained a picture of Gwenny with her big and green eyes focused and he did it for a minute with a smile in his face, he still couldn't believe it. Getting up from the bed, went straight to the bathroom to take a shower. After 10 minutes of singing (badly) the songs that he and Gwenny listened together in the summer to remember the good times.

They start to date in the last month before the summer. It was a shock in the whole school, the most famous couple, Jack and Gwenny, king and queen of the prom was break by Gary, a nerd that is in the Chess team and play RPG games with his friends in free times at school. Everybody started to notice Gary, asking, where did he come from? How did that happen? Well, Gary started to like thus attention and reunions with the popular ones. In the last two weeks at school he didn't play with friends, just spent time with Gwenny.

During the summer the games came back, but Gwenny couldn't know. He always lied when she texted him asking what he was doing while playing in his friend's house. She never forbade him to do anything of that, just said that it just wasn't cool to do this at school, and not to do when people were looking, but do not make her disappointed, he didn't tell.

After the long shower, Gary dressed in black pants, a light blue shirt, and a black vest. Brushed his black hair until it got flat, really looking like a stereotyped nerd. Passed by the living room where was his older brother, Andrew making his morning exercises. Gary ignored him, but he didn't:

"Yeah. My sweet little brother became a man and is nailing Gwenny." He started to barf like a dog raising his arm up like when you are celebrating. Gary just smiled and reprove the gesture with his head, just a little embarrassed, but a little proud of himself.

Gary's brother graduated three years before. He was a part of the football team but wasn't so good. Also, he hates to study, this is why didn't go to college and works in a sports equipment store. He was the total opposite of the fragile and very studious Gary.

When he arrived at school, went straight to his locker, opened it, put some books in it, and glued a photo of Gwenny on the inside part of the locker door. He stopped and stared at the picture for about 20 seconds. Making a satisfaction breath with a smile, he closed the locker and saw Gwenny looking at his face. She was hiding behind the door all the time wanting to surprise. He was so distracted by the photo that couldn't realize her presence. He could use his panoramic view, but he wasn't wearing glasses as he supposed to be, Gwenny didn't like it.

"Hi, Cutty. Wow, you took off your glasses, you look so much better now." She was happy and excited, showing her very white teeth. "I still want to fix this hair. I want something savage."

"But didn't you see that I combed my hair to the right, instead of the left." He said confused.

"You didn't get it. You gotta put some style in it. Put on the internet and try to find something." Gwenny got a little impatient.

"I swear I will do something." Still confused. "Changing the subject, I will go to make my inscription to the chess club, let's go in..." Gwenny interrupted him:

"About this... We need to talk. I won't be comfortable being the Girlfriend of a member of the chess team, it's for dorks. I know that you like it, but it's not good for your reputation, did you get it?" Said smoothly.

"Yeah, I know, but what could I do, then?

"Football team." She didn't consider Gary's height and fragile body. "It's a cool thing."

Gary just gave her a huge laugh. Then answering:

"How do you think I can make it into the football team? You know I suck at sports."

"You are definitely not getting it. It's cool, the important thing is being there." She was saying a spoiled way.

"First, I wouldn't pass in the tryouts. Second, if somehow I get in, I would be a total joke at school."

"Well, you were a joke before we start dating." Gwenny was being evil, trying to shock. Luckily for both, Martha came in to interrupt the conversation to talk to Gary.

"Gary, chess team submissions are open. You need to defend your throne this year." She was smily and bouncy, putting herself in front of him and on the left side of Gwenny.

"I... I will, I just have to..." Gwenny was giving him a mortal look. When he noticed, changed the conversation. "I actually can't this year, you know, lot of things going on, like...football team...you know, takes all of my energy." He was giving an embarrassed smile, moving his arms with a lot of energy.

"Since when you play football?" Martha replied making a weird face, frowning her forehead and nose.

"Since... This summer. I've been playing, you know...found my real thing."

"Okay... We'll miss you there. Well, if you change your mind throughout the year, the door is open." Martha said sadly, turned her back, and left.

Gwenny made a forced laugh, then asked:

"You won't change your mind, right sweetie?" She looked at him with a serious look. Without waiting for the answer, the smile got back into her face when she starts to wave to something behind Gary.

He turned to see who was there. The first one was wearing a red blouse with a white coat and long black pants in her long body. She is not as tall as Gwenny, but it is close. Had also a Chanel haircut and east Asian eyes, it was Alicia Nguyen. The second had a yellow plaid outfit, like in the movie Clueless, she has brown skin and a sophisticated walk in her also tall body. It was Carl's cousin Shawna Carter.

Gwenny, Shawna, and Alicia formed the most popular trio in the whole school. Desired by all guys and imitated (badly) for the other girls, they were always the center of attention in the school.

"Hey girls. Did you see what happened to Megan this summer?" Gwenny started to gossip about Megan getting fat with her friends and letting Gary alone. Realizing this he decided to go somewhere else:

"Hey, Gwenny... I think I gotta go... I have a class..." He was trying to say goodbye over her conversation.

"Ok G, see ya later," said fast and automatically, just to not lose the pace about Megan's big belly.

Gary started to walk towards his class. He was thinking about how a relationship should be if the things that Gwenny asked were reasonable. His dad always said to him that for having good relationships, you must have some sacrifices, but he was asking himself "What is the limit? Do I have to sacrifice all my passions just to be with someone? And risking my life playing football?" He tried to put these thoughts away, but at that moment he crossed the Chess room. This moment he stopped, looked with the corner on the eye, sighed, and started to walk again. But he was determined to keep dating Gwenny, she is the most desired girl in the school, and he didn't want to miss this.
