Tanner's POV.
My mother had been in a coma for a few weeks now. We all thought that she was gradually getting better. The pigment of her skin was still slightly pale. I've always been so used to her ivory skin complexion.
We weren't allowed to miss school, our social worker, Charles Arlene made sure we went. It's been awhile since I walked these halls. It's only been weeks but, It feels like months.
The walls were painted to our school color, purple. I looked around seeing so many unfamiliar faces. Nobody really seem to catch my eye. Except this one boy. I couldn't ever get close to somebody. The moment I went to introduce myself. Some blonde comes up and instantly starts to make-out with him.
I turn away as my phone starts to buzz. I see the color ID. 'Charles Arlene'
"Hello?" I said blankly.
"Hello, Mrs McCray." He said soon continuing. "I'm sorry to inform you, but your mother has had no progress. Therefore, you must be taken care of. You and your brother."
I sighed.
"I've enlisted you into Everose Orphanage." He said. I froze. And I knew it was obvious because everybody was staring.
I felt the walls close on me, and he continued...
"You'll need to pack your bags ASAP." I heard the line go dead and literally fell to the floor.
Everybody flooded the hall, and soon left as the bell rung.
It felt like I was playing a game of Sudden Death. I had no where to go, nobody to turn to. And I was frightened. But I knew that the news had to come across Christian. And it hurt knowing that I was the one to tell him. I saw his face coming down the street off the bus.
"Hey, Tan." He said simply. Not knowing what was coming to him.
"Hey, Chris--" I said dragging on the sentence. "I've got some bad news." I said.
"What happened? Where's mom? Is she okay?" He said flustered.
"She's fine, she's the same. It's okay." I said.
"Don't scare me like that! If it's not about mom... Then what's your bad news?"
"Well, We have to pack our things. We're moving to an orphanage." I said looking down at him.
"W-What?" He said.
"We have to move, we can't live by ourselves. I'm not the legal age yet." I said.
"I'm not going, I'm not leaving mom."
"Christian, we have no other choice."
"Why don't we?!" He practically yelled.
"My moms laying in the hospital bed, My moms dying. My life is over. And people want to move me away from MY life?" He said.
I knew he had to let some kind of frustration out.
He continued.. ".. Away from the only bit of life that I still have." I could see tears running down his face.
I hugged him quickly pulling him into the house.
-----------3 HOURS LATER------------
"Pack everything, I don't know what will happen if we leave something." I said.
"Why do we even have to leave? Don't we have some kind of say-so?" He said back.
"Christian, If we had a 'say-so', don't you think I would've spoken up? I know you don't want to move, I really do. Because, I don't either. But we have no other choice." I said, practically yelled.
I saw the emotion on his face go dull, I could see the tears in his eyes.
"Christian--" I said walking towards him.
"No, don't touch me." He said looking at my face with lost eyes. No emotions found.
We finished packing our bags in silence, our emotions draining on while packing everything we know to have been the same for years. I peeked out the window seeing a black car pulls up.
I looked over before speaking to Christian.
"That's our ride, buddy." I looked away to my bag then back up to his face.
"T-Tanner, I don't want to leave." He began to sob, tears flooding his now swollen cheeks.
I hugged him. Sobbing along with him.
We grabbed our bags, wiped our faces and left our old rooms.
"Hello kids, I'll take your bags." Mr. Arlene said. We thanked him, getting into the back seat.
"This family only takes kids like you, and they usually turn them around from their depression." He said like we were paying attention.
"You should be on your up-most respect for them." He said before pulling up to an apartment complex.
We got out, he stretched his long legs and went to grab our bags.
We carried our bags up the steps that seemed to never end.
