It was a normal day when we first met. You could even argue that it was beautiful. The sky had taken pause in its unending drizzling, allowing the Sun to shine through. Plants were budding as they shook off the Winter, and the birds caroled for the coming of Spring. This natural beauty was lost on my younger self as I drifted to sleep in my carriage.
When I awoke it was to a familiar place. A grand estate with a trimmed, geometrical yard. Behind a stone wall and steel gates stood an idyllic countryside mansion, perfectly symmetrical, an exemplar piece of British architecture. Indeed, the Joestar Mansion was likely the most beautiful building in all of England behind Buckingham itself- and my own estate, of course.
The guards had known me for years, and opened the gates without needing to be asked. One informed me that the young master was in the gardens and I rushed off, foolishly ignoring what else they had to say. I ran around to the back of the house to the prized trophy garden that grew there. It was a beautiful menagerie of flowers from around the world, hand grown by the late lady of the house. It was arranged into shapes and patterns that would look stunning from above. One led to the very back, where an oak tree that I reasoned had existed for all time stood. Under it was a bench, that I was surprised to find unoccupied.
It was then I heard my name being called. "Lucky! Lucky!" The voice that called me was one I had known my whole life. A bright, songful sound that still occasionally floats into my mind on rainy days.
A boy ran down one of the paths perpendicular to mine. Jonathan Joestar, the sole heir to the Joestar lineage, and my closest childhood friend. He was already ridiculously large then and incredibly fast for his size, before I knew it he had eclipsed me. True to the best fighter in the Glens, when he squeezed me in greeting, I could feel the air rush from my lungs as my head was smashed into his chest. Yet I had long grown used to the boy's inherit strength, and wiggled my arms out of his death grip to ruffle his prim blue hair. This quickly caused Jonathan to let me go and huff in frustration.
"Don't do that! You know how hard it is to get my hair proper." He whined, smoothing out his hair.
"If you stopped trying to smother me within your bosom every time we met, Jojo, I wouldn't have to!"
"Oh bugger off it, I do not smother you. This is smothering!" I jump at Jojo before he has the chance to grab me again, tackling him to the ground.
We tussle about, laughing like a pair of loons in the dirt. Someone cleared their throat, catching our attention. I was being pinned down by Jojo's gorilla arms so I tilted my head back to see the offender. Before me stood a stranger, an anomaly in a world of familiarity. Looking into disgusted eyes of molten gold, I felt a shudder run down my spine. 'This one is dangerous,' I thought, 'this one is wrong.'
"Oh, Dio!" Jojo exclaimed, rolling off of me. I got up and brushed myself off, straightening my suit. "You two haven't met yet. This is Dio, Father adopted him. Dio this is Lucky, he's my best friend." His smile was tense, an odd expression for the normally upbeat lad. I wanted desperately to ask what this Dio had done to make him act this way but held my tongue, hiding it behind a toothy smile.
"Pleased to meet you, Lucky Holiday." He regarded my dirty outstretched hand with a brief look of disdain before taking it with a similarly fake smile.
"Dio Brando, it's a pleasure."
"Keeping your last name? It's not one I recognize."
"My family is not one of any worth, I'm blessed that Sir Joestar took me in. I am not so impertinent to consider myself part of the family."
"Don't speak like that, Dio!" Jojo exclaimed. "You're part of the family now and I'd be more than happy to call you my brother."
The blonde's smile fell. "Perhaps one day, I'm not sure I can handle having a new family so quickly." Regret and pity speared my heart.
"I see." Jojo mumbled, bowing his head.
Dio sighed, turning away. "I just came to tell you Sir Joestar was calling for you. Lunch is ready." He briskly walked away.
I turned to my friend, whose brilliant blue eyes were beginning to water. Feeling my eyes, he looked at me with a dismayed expression. "It's okay, Jojo." I rubbed his back in an attempt to reassure him. "You heard him right? He just needs some time."
He wipes his eyes. "Yeah, you're right." Brightening up in record time, the boy loops his arm in mine. "Come on, we don't want the food to get cold."
Lunch was an odd affair. There was lingering tension between us and Dio, Jojo didn't stuff his face nearly as much and I picked at my plate, stealing glances at the blonde across the table. Sir Joestar was oblivious to the atmosphere and spoke after finishing his food. "I see you've been introduced to Lucky, Dio?'
"Yes, sir."
"The Joestar and Holiday families has been friends for gene rations. It would please me greatly if you all could get along."
"Of course." Dio purses his lip. "The Holiday family, I believe several members of the Royal guard are from your family, right?"
"Yes. We also deal in trade across Europe." I pondered telling them then, but Jojo ruined the opportunity.
"Lucky's family travels all around the world. A lot of the foreign items you see in the house were presents from them." Sir Joestar nodded in agreement.
"Amazing. You must tell me some stories some time."
"I'd be glad to."
Lunch ended without anything else of note. We returned to the gardens to chat some more, this time with Dio in tow. I remember trying my hardest to make the boy feel welcome and feeling like I had succeeded by the end of the day. He was charming, witty and with a quick tongue, often at Jojo's expense. He laughed it off after sulking for a bit. We had a horse race around the estate that I won by a landslide and tossed a ball about. I tried coaxing Danny to join in, but he avoided us for some reason. The details of then were fuzzy, but I know that we somehow messed about until it was dinner time.
The mood was much more amicable, though we ate in relative silence. With every moment that passed, I grew more and more tense, knowing that I had to tell them at some point. Heart heavy, I stood from my seat, gaining the attention of the table. "I have an announcement to make." Sir Joestar nodded for me to continue. "In order to improve business relations, I will be moving to Italy this Summer."
"What?!" Jojo choked, banging his chest to quickly swallow.
"Jonathan!" Sir Joestar admonished.
"Sorry, Father. This is news to me, when are you coming back?"
"It depends on how well business goes, it may take several years."
"Years?!"
"And your mother agreed to this?"
"She said it was a good opportunity."
Jojo slammed his hands on the table. "I'm done eating." He announced and ran up to his room. I gave a halfhearted apology and ran after him.
He barely managed to slam the door closed before I could squeeze through. I banged on the door, begging for him to come out. He yelled at me, calling me a terrible friend and a hundred other things I knew he said in the heat of the moment but still hurt. After nearly a half hour, Sir Joestar told me that my carriage was waiting and I gave up. I don't remember what I said to Jojo as I left, but I know that it made him fall quiet.
The ride home was a silent one; I watched the manor disappear over the horizon, not realizing that that would be the last day 'Lucky Holiday' stepped on the grounds.
I left that day dejected. Monday rolled past without a word, neither did the next, nor the one after that. By the time the end of the month came, I was all but dead to the world, wallowing in a sea of self pity and regret. It was then that he approached me.
