"wait what," I whispered glancing up at the teacher who continued to flip through the names. "I said you will be working with Tsukishima." The teacher repeated, clearly upset that I was not paying attention. I then turned to face Tsukishima who was seated a few rows behind me.
How had I not noticed he was in my class yesterday?
Tsukishima seemed unphased by the teacher's words, his headphones still on as he scribbled something on a piece of paper.
"Well it could always be worse," I muttered under my breath.
I glanced down at my bookbag, picking it up to search for more pieces of paper for the project. I thought about Tsukishima's snarky comment from earlier. A sudden wave of nervousness flushed over me, I didn't want something like that to happen again. I knew for a fact Tsukishima knew how it made me feel. when I glanced back up he was already sitting at the desk in front of me. He made eye contact with me, expressionless. I looked away quickly, placing my eyes on my desk. He leaned back in his seat with his eyes still towards the floor, I could hear his music blasting. A shiver ran down my spine; despite my attitude, his presence was still intimidating. I didn't know why I was quite so scared, guys didn't usually scare me or anything. He glanced up my way and noticed I was staring at him again. He smiled softly before chuckling and taking off his headphones.
"didn't we already have a discussion about staring earlier today shortie?" he said picking up my pen and twirling it around in his fingers. I felt the urge to try and make some comback but, I pushed it away for some reason. I didnt respond, I simply looked to the ground and nodded, picking up my textbook to start the project. Tsukishima put the pen down and did the same. Out of the corner of my eye I could see he looked almost concerned in a way, but held his grudging face to a frown. He was probably waiting for me to fire back, as I did earlier at lunch. For the first day of the project we didnt say a word to eachother, we sat there in silence as we read the reccommended pages in the book. When the bell rang for class I stood up in a hurry, not wanting to be late and partially wanting to get out of the awkward situation.
--------------
I burst into practice nearly toppling onto the floor. Kiyoko and the coach came over to help me out.
"I'm so sorry I'm late! I stopped by the store to get some snacks for everyone, I thought they might like it." I said as they took items from my overfilled hands. "Don't worry about it! This is amazing thank you Y/N." The coach said as he walked back over to his spot, notioning for me to follow him.
Later, coach ended practice early so the team could get a snack on their way out and discuss plans. I sat there silently as I watched the team. On my way out of the gym I was stopped by Hinata and Noya.
"Thanks so much for the food Y/n!"I laughed, "Of course!" I responded as I explained to the boys I was late to get home and had to start walking. I waved as I took a step back but a voice called out to me.
"Y/N, hold on." I peered over Hinata's shoulder as a familiar figure approached us. Tsukishima walked with his hands in his pockets slightly slouched over, he reached from his bag and pulled out a small black pen, which I recognized immediately.
"You dropped this earlier when you were leaving class." He said, gazing at the pen as he waited for me to take it. My eyes shifted from him and the small ballpoint pen, as I took it carefully. That was rather curteous of Tsukishima, although it didn't seem much like his character."Wow Tsukishima actually did something nice for once?" Tanaka called out as he left the gym. The group laughed as Tsukishima scoffed, only furrowing his brows and digging his hands deeper into his pockets.
"Thank you Tsukishima-san," I said timidly, as my gaze transferred to the dirt beneath us. I could feel Tsukishima's eyes on me now. I listened as the rest of the group had now started leaving the school, and were already to the front gate. Yamaguchi of course, caught up to Tsukishima.
I didn't say anything, except took a step away from Tsukishima and began to walk home. I listened as Yamaguchi began to talk, "Are you ready Tsukki?" There was no response, except a moment of silence before Tsukishima spoke up again.
"I don't hate you ya know-"
I turned around reluctantly to see Tsukishima kicking some dirt beneath his feet, Yamaguchi was watching our conversation curiously. I stayed silent, as I stared at Tsukishima. He looked up at me, not breaking eye contact. His expression was no longer intimidating, or monotone like it usually was. There was a slight reassurance in his eyes, something I hadn't noticed earlier.
"That's just how I speak to everyone. I'm sorry." Tsukishima said, turning to leave the school, without saying another word. Yamaguchi raised his eyebrows surprised before turning to follow Tsukishima. I stood still, watching them leave.
"Wow," Yamaguchi said, "You actually apologized to someone!"
"Shut up," Tsukki replied as Yamaguchi let out a laugh. I listened as their voices slowly faded the further they got. I glanced back down at the black pen that was still sitting between my fingers. I rolled my eyes as a small smile crept onto my face.
"This probably has cooties on it now," I said while I placed the pen in my back pocket. I let out a little laugh as I tightened the grip on my bag."Well, someone's going to be upset I missed curfew."
