I couldn't tell if it was my imagination. I walked closer, if it was them, that means my sister lied to me.
"Is it really you guys?" I ask stepping closer. My mother runs up to me and holds me. I hear her softly crying. My dad slowly walks up and puts his arms around my mother and I.
"Oh Hollis, we never wanted to leave you and your sister." My mother tells me still holding on. "What do you mean, did you choose to be here?" Why would they leave us.
"We had to, it was the only way to protect you." I didn't really know how to feel about all of this. My parents left me and my sister, when all this time I thought they were taken.
"Oh." Is all I can think to say. I'm curious to see, even though I know there thoughts will be blocked. I reach my mind out only to be hit with a brick wall.
I see my dad and mom wince a little, "Are you guys ok?"
"Yea, my head just hurt for a second," my mother says, "Did you try reading our minds?" How'd she know I try'd. Did I cause their heads to hurt.
"Yea, sorry I was just curious." I shift around on my feet, feeling uncomfortable. You'd think after not seeing your parents for years it would be better.
I notice my parents giving each other a look, "Why don't we show you around." My mother starts walking down the long hallway.
We made our way to a huge stairwell, "This place seems huge." We make our way down. I'm greeted with the boy who took me here. He's standing next to a very tall man. The man looks to be around his 30s. He has a shaved face and a full set of hair with not one grey hair to be found.
My dad whispers something into his ear. The tall man looks to me and smiles. "It is so wonderful to finally meet you. I've heard wonderful things. My name is David ." He shocks me by pulling me into a hug.
"I'm sure you are very confused and have many questions, they will be answered. But first lets get you settled in."
They show me around the huge mansion. Room after room there was always something extravagant. I met all the house workers and people who lived there that were mind readers.
"Do the house workers know about.... our powers?" We walked into the grand kitchen. "No they don't. We don't want any regular humans to know."
"How about we get you some food. Your parents and I have some things to discuss but you can stay with Luke." I look over and see Luke smiling.
As of right now, I don't trust him. First of all he used fake thoughts on me and second he basically kidnapped me. Although, I do get to see my parents.
This house is very nice but since almost everyone here knows how to block there thoughts it's silent, something I'm not used to. Surprisingly I miss hearing people's thoughts.
"While you're here you need to learn to block your thoughts better." It's not that I didn't know how to block my thoughts, I'm just not used to havering to always have a wall up.
"Much better." I give off my best fake smile, "So are we gonna eat or...?" I ask. He walks over to the cabinets and pulls something out, "Do you like macaroni and cheese?" I laugh at his choice of food, "What's so funny." He smiles. I never noticed how cute his smile was.
"Nothing, and yes that's fine." I sit and watch him make it. Even though I don't trust him, he is very attractive. Of course I would never admit that to him.
"Earlier you said you didn't trust me, well you didn't say it but I didn't want to have to act fake and take you, it's just I had to." He explains himself. That's does make me feel a little better but not completely.
"I have a question." He sits down next to me, handing me a bowl, ",How did you do that, have different thoughts. I mean I know anyone can fake thoughts but it's hard to cover up real ones."
"It's one of the things you will learn here." I look down at my food and take a few bites, "What do you mean learn?"
"We are gonna get you to use your abilities as much as you can and the highest you can. That's what this place is for. Not to torture mind readers like your sister told you."
I sat silently for a second. I reached out for his thoughts, I felt his wall up but maybe I could slip by it. I push a little harder. It almost feels like it will break.
Suddenly I'm overwhelmed with thoughts. I hear a small grunt come from Luke. I don't have time to really listen to his thoughts before his wall is back up. "Are you ok?" I ask. Did I do that?
"Yea I'm fine. Did you do that?" I didn't know if I did or not. I'm used to having thoughts come to me to I don't know what it's like to have to break through to here them, "I think."
He got up and dashed out the kitchen, leaving my alone and confused.
I sat there for a second until someone came in, "You must be Hollis. I heard there was a new girl. Heads up they're give you a lot of attention and then toss you to the side. So don't get too used to it."
Who is she? Why is she so rude? "I'm Hannah, and I'm not being rude I just am warning you." I forgot again, I quickly put my wall up.
"Oh so you do know how to block your thoughts. I just thought you were stupid." What is her deal. If I could I would slap her.
"OW!" I look over at her shocked by her sudden outburst, "What, what happened?" She had her hand up to her cheek holding it, "It felt like someone just slapped me." What was that me? I did mentally slap her. What's going on?
I get up from my seat and leave to go find my parents.
(Later)
"You may now start asking all the questions you want." I didn't even know where to start.
"Are you going to teach me things?"
"Yes we will be teaching you how to use your powers better."
"How long have you and my parents known each other?"
"Ever since they first came here."
"Why'd you leave us?" This question was directed to my parents.
"We never wanted to. We had to. There's too much to explain."
"You said you'd answer all my questions."
My mother let out a small sigh, " There is other people out there who really are a threat to us. We had to come here and we couldn't take you with us. It would put you and your sister in more danger."
"Well why did you take me now, and why not take my sister?"
"Hollis you are capable of many more things. Your sister can't do all the things you can."
"So you just leave her! What if those other people go after her!"
"Your sister has known about this the whole time, she knows you're here, the reason you left Texas wasn't because of of the PAF it was..." She looks over to David.
"Let's just say for now it was the government." He says.
"What if she gets taken. Then what?" Now that I know about all this I can't stop worrying about her.
"She won't get taken, she'll be coming here soon." It makes me feel a little bit better but I know there's still the possibility she'll get taken.
"Hollis I think this has all been too much for you. Why don't you go to bed." I nods my head in agreement.
My night was filled with thoughts of my sister, my parents, Luke. Everything.
