I sat bathed in amber sunlight that filtered in through the fogged, rounded window beside me. The smell of old leather books and crisp beige parchment hung in the air, beautifully combining with bracing wafts of pine from the new tables. Besides the occasional flick of a page, soft whisper of the lanterns and the muted passing of a gaggle of students in the hallways, the library was silent. My hands were red from the cold; this room was so vastly large it was incredulously hard to keep warm, especially as we sunk slowly into the frosty winter.
My icy fingers played feverishly with the feathered end of my quill, brushing over it's soft whispy spindles as I read over my writing.
It had been 2 days since my first Potions lesson with Malfoy and his friends. I hadn't had one since, and I was preparing myself mentally for the next.
Both Alisha and I had 'Theory of Charms' homework due that I hadn't yet done, and so I had headed to the library to search for a text book with what I needed.
"Hey! Alisha abruptly sprung up to me, beaming.
"Heya."
"Sorry, I'm late. I was helping out Professor Trelawney with something."
I raised my eyebrows at her, expecting her to elaborate, but she didn't.
"Have you heard?"
"About what?" I asked as she sat down, getting some parchment out of her backpack she dropped down on the bench next to her.
"The Triwizard Tournament." She grinned, her voice exasperated and full of excitement. How someone could have so much energy I'd never know.
"I forgot that's this year."
"How could you forget?" She exclaimed, pushing a strand of blonde, curly hair out her face.
"Not sure. Considering our O.W.L.S are this year as well, it isn't great timing."
"I know. It would have been so much better if it had lined up with last year." She nodded, knowingly, "last year was so boring."
I hummed in agreement, attempting to get back to work.
"-The Goblet of Fire is going to be placed in the Great Hall in two weeks from today!"
Guess finishing the homework is out of the question.
I paused a moment, thinking through the dates. "The 30th of October?"
"Yes, and then the names are selected on Halloween night! Isn't that awesome?"
Alisha had always been a huge fan of Halloween, and the Hogwart's feast that came with it. She would always go out of her way to try to get everyone into the Halloween spirit.
Last year she made friends with loads of ghosts and got them to play pranks on other students throughout Halloween evening."You'd have to be insane to want to do it." I shook my head. I never understood how the tradition was still allowed; it was horrifically dangerous. The idea of the challenges flipped my stomach.
"I know. I wouldn't dare. I'm just looking forward to the Yule Ball!" Her lips were plastered into a firm grin. I knew how much she'd been looking forward to this; ever since the first year she'd fawned over the tradition.
I grinned at this, a brief flash of the dress I had chosen popping into my mind. I had to admit, I was excited to wear it.
"Are you thinking of going with anyone?" Alisha adjusted her position on her seat slightly, angling herself to look me straight in the eyes.
I hummed, "Not really... Can't think of anyone. If someone asked me, sure. How 'bout you?"
She wiggled her eyebrows at me, "Well, we'll just wait and see, I guess!"
