My father’s scream echoed throughout the house, a haunting eerie sound. “Dad!” Corbin screamed, frantically sprinting to the downstairs office. The smell of vampires was everywhere. Colton froze in place, barley even breathing as my father’s screams got louder and louder. Instantly, he snapped out of his daze and ran over to the kitchen counter, feeling underneath it for the flip switch. I heard a slight click and the counter flipped its granite surface to reveal the small weapons storage that we kept in each room. Colton tossed me a small knife and a gun with nine silver bullets. He threw my mother a dagger and a small bag. I would’ve wondered what the contents of the bag were but I had no time.

“Cover me,” said Colton in a hushed tone. I picked up the gun, keeping my back to the wall at all times. Though he knew my mother didn’t approve, my father had given me lessons on how to defend myself against these creatures. I walked back wards with ease, memorizing Colton and my mother’s footstep patterns as I move towards the office. Colton grips the doorknob and yanks it open to find Corbin soaked in Dad’s blood.

“Jonathan!” My mother screamed, tearing at the hem of her dress. She pulled off a piece if the fabric and placed it on his throat to try to stop the bleeding. The cloth was drenched in minutes. I stood at the corner of the room, tears filling my eyes as I listened to my parents’ last goodbyes.

“Josie, I-I-I love you,” My father stuttered.

“Oh Jonathan, I love you more than life itself,” she muttered, placing a kiss to the corner of his mouth as his chest rose one last time and he released his final breath. My mother stood in shock, looking down at her blood stained dress. Her hands shook as she took the cloth away from my father’s throat.

“Mother, we have to go, they’ll be closing in on us shortly. Especially now with all this… blood.” Corbin spoke up, choking up at the end of the sentence. She gave a curt nod and kissed my father’s cheek. Colton felt around for the button that opened the secret passage way into the barn. He pressed it, which opened the bookcase like a door, revealing the dark tunnel. Mother, picked up her skirts and I followed shortly after. The bookcase slammed shut behind us, leaving Colton and Corbin on the other side.

“What kind of game are you playing Colton? They’ll eat you alive, come on, this can save you!” I screamed at the top of my lungs, tears falling from my eyes and my fists pounding on the silver backing of the wooden bookcase.

“It’s the only way to keep you safe!” Corbin shouted as I could hear the office door opening.

“I love you guys, please don’t leave me!” I whimpered.

“We love you too.” They said in a whisper as footsteps invaded the room. I could hear a woman’s voice but couldn’t make out her words. Then a man’s voice started interrogating my brother’s.

“Where is that lovely sister of yours? I can smell her sugary sweet blood from here.” The man said. I could hear Corbin scream in agony.

“Tell me where they are!”

“Never!” Corbin shouted, letting out another scream.
