I lay on my bed and closed my eyes, thinking about the past two weeks of Hell. Maddox had finally taken the chains off of me, letting me roam freely around my room in my tower. Every day he has come to visit me, along with Pierce to make sure I don’t “try anything”. He has whipped me nearly every day for some sort of disobedience. Yesterday it was because I refused to “do anything” with him, if you know what I mean. I’m only seventeen years old; I do not need to be doing that kind of thing until I’m good and ready. The conversation rang in my head.

“You’re acting like a child!” Maddox screamed at me, running his hand furiously through his messy white hair. He gave me a look as he paced around the bed.

“Well, that’s because I am a child… Wow, I knew vampires were the pillaging “Take what’s yours” type, but I didn’t know that also they enjoyed raping children.” I said, earning me a hard slap on the mouth for my sarcasm. The slap send my head slamming into the bed frame. I gripped the back of my head as the throbbing began.

“We’ll be married in a few weeks; we’re going to have to do it at some point.” He said hopefully, as if that would persuade me.

“Um, how about no Maddox, I’m sure you’ve never heard that word before but you’re hearing it now.” I said, facing him with a cold glare.

“What did you just say to me?”

“I am NOT going to marry you!”

“Yes you are!”

“No I’m not! I don’t know where you come from but people get engaged before they plan a wedding. They don’t murder someone’s family and then force them into it. And another thing, stop with the biting, I know what you’re doing and it’s not going to work.”

“Oh my darling, now you’ve pissed me off. You always do this, why can’t you just be obedient!” He screamed, reaching over in the drawer for the whip.

“Maddox, I’m going to kill you one day.” I said as he forced me onto my stomach.

“I’ll let you think that precious.”

His ice cold voice buzzed in my head like a mosquito. I heard the door open and saw an older woman standing in the doorway.

“Hello.” I said cautiously, though she smelled like a wolf, everything smells the same to me here.

“Hello Miss.” The woman said quietly. She was completely bald with six earrings on both ears. Her dress was similar to one of Lyric’s, dirty and handmade. Her silver eyes searched the room, checking for someone.

“I’m Carter, and you are?” I asked as she took a careful step into the room.

“Gloria miss, thank you for sticking up for Lyric lately. I’ve taken care of the girl since she was a pup and she’s like my daughter.” Gloria muttered quietly but looked mw in the eye.
