As I was walking down the sidewalk, the car that seemed to be watching me pulled out of where it was parked and slowly started driving towards me.
"Please don't stop, please don't stop, please don't stop" I muttered. Panicking I walked into a coffee shop that I was passing by. Once the car saw me go in, they drove off. Letting out a breath I didn't know I was holding I examined the coffee shop I walked in. Some people were staring at me skeptically, after all I just barged in. I put on a fake small smile and decided to just buy a coffee while I was here.
Once I got it, I left the coffee shop and walked back down the sidewalk to my car. I fished for my keys in my purse, unlocking my car after feeling the cool metal of the keys. I got in and started driving to school. Of course, I only had 10 minutes to get to school before I was late. I was feeling more tired than usual considering what just happened. I thought of all those murder shows I watch where they get kidnapped off the streets, raped, and killed. I shuddered.
"Life is great" I said sarcastically.
Pulling into the parking lot, I rushed into the building I considered prison. College was fun, but not the whole going to class part. And it's only my first year so I was still getting used to things. I went to my legal studies major and sat down. Glancing at the time on the clock, I was 8 minutes late, so I got a couple looks but I ignored them. After almost in hour of sitting here listening to my professor lecture us, I felt someone stand behind me.
"Hey Aspin" Nick said, pulling out a chair and sitting next to me.
"Hey, good to see you" I said smiling.
He came up and sat next to me on the first day and started talking to me. Ever since we have been good friends. Brushing his hand through his fluffy brown hair, he sighed.
"So um I've been thinking about this for awhile and I decided I'm just going to ask you. I was wondering if you would like to come with me to dinner as a, you know, date"? Nick said, his face turning red and his hazel eyes looked at me anxiously.
I didn't particularly like him like that. He was cute, but that doesn't mean I would want to date him.
"Listen, I think your cute and all, but I kinda just want to stay friends, you know? I'm just not into dating that much and I don't want us to date and it not work out and then things just be awkward after. But I can still go with you on this "date" if you don't mind" I said, giving him a small smile. I felt bad, but I didn't want to lead him on.
"Oh ok I understand. But yeah I would love it if you could still come with me. I was thinking about going to a fair that opened a couple days ago." Nick said, slightly disappointed but also excited I still wanted to go.
"That's sounds fun, I'm down"
Nick fist pumped the air and smiled.
"See you tomorrow night at 7? Sorry I asked on a short notice, I was really nervous." Nick said.
"Oh it's no problem. I'll see you later then?" I said.
"Yep, see you Aspin"! He replied.
The class had ended, so we went our separate ways. I got in my car and went to pick up my brother and sister from school.
"Hey guys how was school"? I asked Josh and Alice.
Alice was the first to answer. "It was amazing! Me and my friends presented our project in class and we ended up getting an A. Not to mention, once we finished the whole class started clapping. Our focus was on why we needed less strict dress codes and thankfully the teacher agreed too". she said excitedly.
"What a loser. School sucked, as always. Me and my friends skipped 3rd period though so that was fun." Josh told me.
Ok that made me mad. Just because Alice actually cared about her education and future doesn't make her a loser. Then on top of that, he causally told me he just skipped one of his classes. He seemed to forget that he can't continue football or get a career in it if he fails his classes.
"Josh that is unacceptable. I will be contacting your teacher about this and you will not only apologize but start attending ALL your classes. I will keep up with your teachers and your work regularly. Also don't forget that if you keep failing your classes kiss your football dreams goodbye. Understand? I will not tolerate that." I told him with the most serious tone I could muster.
He only grumbled "yes ma'am" in response and the rest of the car ride was silent.
Pulling into the driveway of our home, I noticed my dads car wasn't here and I let out a sigh of relief. The last thing I wanted to see was him. He was drunk pretty much everyday and his abuse and yelling took a toll on me and my siblings.
Grabbing their backpacks they walked up to the front door and waited for me to get my stuff and unlock the house.
I unlocked the house and set my keys in the bowl by the front door and told the kids to put their backpacks away and start their homework and shower while I got dinner ready. Tonight I just settled on some pasta and homemade lemonade. Stirring the marina sauce into the pasta, I heard the front door open and I paled. I knew it was my father because I could smell the alcohol from here. It was stronger than usual, which didn't help ease the panic I felt rising in my chest.
"Wheres dinner!" my dad yelled. I flinched at his voice and replied back.
"It's almost done, I just have to finish stirring the sauce in the pasta" I muttered.
Instantly I felt a strong slap to the cheek. I could feel the burning swelling and knew it would probably leave a bruise. I stumbled a little and almost fell if it wasn't for the counter I already had a grip on.
"WHAT HAVE I TOLD YOU ABOUT MUTTERING!" He bellowed. I paled once again as I remember he told me he didn't like it when we talked low. According to him it was disrespectful and he deserved full respect. That was funny coming from him. I mean how do you expect people to treat you with respect if you don't give it back?
I said "sorry sir" in a clear voice.
"Don't let it happen again or your punishment will be worse" he said, the venom from his voice sending chills down my spine.
"Yes sir" I said again and put the pasta onto plates for everyone. I quickly made the lemonade and poured it in everyone's cups. Once I poured it in my fathers, he immediately drank from it and his face showed a sign of disgust.
"It's missing sugar, put more in it now" he said calmly, not the soothing type but the one before a storm. I quickly fetched the sugar and poured some in his cup then in the container that held the rest of the lemonade.
Once I set it down, my father took my plate of pasta and poured it in his plate.
"Since I'm still hungry and you messed up the lemonade, I will be taking your pasta for myself as punishment. You can wait to eat till breakfast." He said with a sinister smile. My siblings mouths dropped and they sent me worried and apologetic stares. They both knew that when this happened to stay silent and ignore it, for I didn't want them to get in trouble like I did. I cared for them and loved them more like a mom than a sister. Seeing them get hurt would break me more than I already was.
Walking up the stairs, I stripped off my clothes and put them in a hamper for laundry later. Then I got in the shower and let the hot steamy water relax my tense muscles. I shaved then washed my hair with shampoo and conditioner before using my body wash. I turned off the shower and wrapped myself in a white fluffy towel. I then walked out and put on underwear and a pair of black pajama shorts with a
oversized tee. After completing my homework I didn't wait to crawl into bed and drift off to sleep, letting the peaceful darkness take over.
