The rest of the night was nightmare free. I open my eyes feeling a ray of sunshine warm my body. I sit up and stretch my arms out. I finally got 4 hours of sleep. I look over and expect to see Lane snoring.
But that when I realize there is no snoring.
Lanes gone.
"Lane?" Usually I am up before him. Could the Sanders..?
But why would they just get him? What about me?
And July and Martin...
"Lane?!" I scream again. I throw the blanket made of bear skin to the ground and sprint to the door. Which is not far away since this room is about 100 square feet. I swing the door open with such force the door comes off the hinges. I will fix that later. If there is a later.
I run to July and Martins attempt of their house which is leaning against the tree directly across from ours.
"July!" I yell charging to to their house.
"I can't find Lane any-" the words die in my throat. No one is here. Even the blanket is gone.
I feel the tears already coming down. If those Sanders took them I will make sure every last one of them is dead or being for mer-
"Pastel?"
I fall to the ground with relief. I don't even bother to turn around. I could identify his voice anywhere.
Lane.
"Hey, what's wrong?" he says sitting down next to me, embracing me in a hug.
I laugh through my tears. "The first words I spoke, well screamed, this morning was Lane and July."
"There's no better way to start off the day." He jokes nudging my arm.
"Wait where's July and Martin?"
He doesn't answer.
I look up at him. " Wait why were you gone to? Oh my god did the Sanders-"
"No," he says running a hand through this hair. "I promised them I won't tell you because they knew you were going to freak out."
I scramble to my feet, wiping dirt off of my black leggings.
"Why? What are they doing?"
He doesn't answer again.
Then it hits me.
"They went back to Gainington." I whisper.
"It's Martins 17th birthday and he want July to come with him to visit their family." He reasons.
"But don't they remember what happened last time?!" I retort.
It was just after our first month of us being here in the woods. We were running out of food and haven't taken a shower or changed our clothes for a month.
"We need to go back." I said.
We built our house out of tree stumps and long dried up pieces of grass.
No one argued. We weaved in and out of the trees who were just losing their leaves. July and Martin walked in front of Lane and I.
He held my hand flashing one of his heart melting smiles.
Lopsided with dimples.
The Sanders , our 'beloved leaders' created this new society called Sanderburg. And the people who run Sanderburg are called Sanders.
The war that happen was only 50 years ago.
Everyone that was alive before than got there memories washed away. Well only the memories that were about life before Sanderburg. They still remember who they are and their family along with their friends but everything else is fake. If they rebelled against Sanderburg during the war all their memories were wiped away.
And that's how most of the Sanders came to be.
The other ones just volunteered from the coldness of their heart,or were forced against their will. I used to respect the Sanders.
But after I saw the Chains and realized I had The Impossible... well my point of view about them changed.
The four of us climbed the sand bags used as a replacement for the fence they are buildings around the entire Sandersburg. Which is pretty big.
We decide to stop by Lanes house first. He lived in the rich part of Sanderburg, but everyone does Training together. Lane ran inside his 4 story house while July, Martin, and I hid in his family's garden.
Sanders were patrolling the streets. In the distance you could see the skyscrapers of Burgens.
I always wanted to visit the city.
There was electronic billboards on each building bright, and big enough for us-hiding in the garden- to see our wanted pictures.
The Sanders must have wanted us really badly.
Lane came back out with a backpack filled with food, clothes, and a blanket. Next stop was my house.
I hopped through my window and looked at my room.
It still smelled like vanilla, my favorite scent. I grabbed a coral bag and stuffed random clothes in it. I grabbed my favorite white wool blanket, and put all the food in my mini fridge, in my bag. I remember being so tempted to go out and see my parents again.
But that would put them in danger.
After that we went to Martins house.
Once she came back we made out way to Julys house.
That's when everything went wrong.
July wanted to see her parents so badly she ran in through the front door screaming "MOM! DAD! ITS ME JULY!"
A man with no hair and a black jumpsuit approached her.
That's when I realized that was a Sander.
And that Sander was Julys dad.
We barely made it out alive. We were all so confused. Why was Julys dad a Sander? No one wants to be one. Unless they are forced against their will.
That's when we all wondered if all of our parents were Sanders.
